FBI warns 10 cities about demonstrations
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apus_story.asp?category=1110&slug=Eco%20Terrorism

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The FBI has told law enforcement agencies across the country that radical environmentalists may stage protests, possibly violent ones, this weekend in support of a jailed arsonist.

The FBI bulletin said the Earth Liberation Front reportedly was planning a "day of action and solidarity" that could include acts of eco-terrorism, according to Tor Bjornstad, a police commander in Olympia, one of 10 cities named as possible targets.

The others were Eugene; Ore.; San Francisco; Modesto, Calif.; Morgantown, W. Va.; Portland, Maine; Worcester, Mass.; Lake Worth, Fla.; and Lawrence, Kan., Bjornstad said.

The general warning was part of a weekly intelligence bulletin the FBI distributed to some 18,000 law enforcement agencies on Wednesday, said Bill Carter, a spokesman in the FBI's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

27. Lawrence has had "difficulties" before with protests
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 04:55 AM by SoCalDem
In the early 70's, they did have some pretty rambunctious protests there, over the war.. I remember my mother sending me clippings.. (I went to KU)..

I don't think this time would be even close, but I think they are just reacting to "liberal college" types of places, and Lawrence sort of fits the bill too.:)

This Is America?: The Sixties in Lawrence, Kansas
I grew up in Lawrence, Kansas in the '60s, and attended the University of Kansas during the time of the political protests, riots, violence, and police shootings that are among the most important events recounted in this book. So it's possible that I cannot really be fair to this author. His book is a decent history of the '60s in Lawrence, and the author employs an impressive array of primary research such as letters to the newspapers, letters to congressmen, and some interviews with residen...

Ashcroft may be exaggerating the threat (likely) but that doesn't change the fact that ELF are a bunch of assholes.

28. NPR did a little blurb on this yesterday
as I was driving to my class. Seems that ELF, whatever it is, is now a terra ist organization.
The Pharmaceutical companies, and Oil companies, the monopolies like Wal Mart, the Timber industry, amd corporate malfeseance..they are NOT terra-ists, you know. They are who pays the Asscrack crowd and the Bush administration all the monies to destroy our water, air, and environment. Ergo, they are the good guys, right?
I do not condone violence in the name of environmentalism. But I do condone non violent legal demonstrations.
Let us hope that SOME people on the Right have actually READ the Constitution and KNOW the difference.
In the meantime, contribute heartily, if you can, to the ACLU.
The ACLU is busier then a one legged man at an ass kicking contest right now.

Russian Anarchists tag 'Free Jeff Luers' on US Embassy in Moscow

Yesterday evening a group of anarchists in Moscow wrote "FREE JEFF LUERS!" with huge letters on the wall of the US Embassy in Moscow. Protesting this way against imperial "justice", radical activists gave moral support to their comrade Jeffrey Luers. All participators of the action successfully escaped, so security of one of the tightest guarded buildings in Moscow was put in shame.

1. The word "eco-terrorist" sounds kinda similar to "bio-terrorist", are they using the environment as a weapon?

2. Using anti-terror laws to lock up some kid for 22 years and 8 month for burning 3 SUVs. I'm not condoning his actions by any means, but doesn't that seem a little excessive?

40. It is extremely excessive
It's the state saying 3 cars are worth more than the a human life or the well-being of a child.

"In a society where murderers and rapists with prior convictions get out of jail in 4 years, a 22.5 year sentence for a property crime seems out of wack."

DEEP FORBIDDEN LAKE Lyrics

On the lake, the deep forbidden lake,
The old boats go gliding by,
And the leaves are falling from the trees
And landing on the logs and I
See the turtles heading for the bog
And falling off the log.
They make the water splash,
And feeling no backlash,
They climb the happy banks.

On the boats, the old and creaky boats,
The shoreline goes gliding by,
And the wind, there was a dying breeze,
Is making the banners fly.
See the colors, floating in the sky,
The pride of the captain's eye,
As he glides
His slender craft inside
And opens up the door.

On the coast, the long and tempting coast,
The cards on the table lie,
And a speech, so eloquent in reach,
Was made by a passerby,
Passing by the way between
Here and left behind.
And it ripples through the crowds
Who run and cast their doubts
In the deep forbidden lake.

Yes, it echoes through the crowds
Who run and cast their doubts
In the deep forbidden lake.
