PORT SALERNO, Fla. -- Nervous parents are keeping a closer eye on their children in this coastal town where the strangled bodies of three women have been found over the past 10 weeks. Police warned residents to be cautious and to keep their doors locked but said the killings did not appear to be random: All the victims had visited woods where drug users are known to camp.
The body of Jackie Bradley, a 43-year-old homeless woman, was found near a canal March 31. Last week, the body of Carrie Caughey, 18, was discovered at a nearby pond. On Sunday, the mother of Christal Wiggins, 29, called police to report her missing, and authorities became alarmed because she was last seen near the pond where Caughey was found. Police found Wiggins' body Monday.
Authorities are warning that the killer may still be stalking the area, but they also are trying to curtail the fear spreading through Port Salerno, a town of about 10,000 people about 100 miles north of Miami.
"We're sure that whoever it is knew the victims, shared that type of lifestyle, whether it was using drugs or drinking a beer in the woods. It wasn't a stranger," said Martin County Sheriff's Capt. Ed Kirkpatrick. "We're quite sure that we don't have a lunatic running around just murdering people."
