US-Australia alliance will survive, ambassador says
"US presidential candidate John Kerry's foreign affairs adviser, Wendy Sherman, says the US and Australia will have a very strong alliance regardless of who is president of the US and prime minister of Australia.
.......

BARRIE CASSIDY: I get the impression from all of that that once the heat died down, the elections are held, that Mark Latham would be welcome in the White House no matter who was in charge.

AMBASSADOR WENDY SHERMAN: I have no doubt that the prime minister of Australia, whomever he may be, or maybe whomever she may be some day, will be welcome in the White House with open arms. We have an alliance that goes back many, many years, we work on many issues around the world. America, and I believe a president Kerry, would lead a very strong alliance. It's an alliance that we care about a great deal."

So you guys do what you have to do to defeat Bush and we will get rid of Little Johnny and PM Latham will be the first to congratulate President Kerry.

2. Can you do one better than just voting him out?

We know you're going to give Little Johnny the boot -- but doesn't the old bugger deserve a truly memorable farewell?

I was thinking you could set him adrift in a lifeboat, a la Captain Bligh.

How about that stretch of the Great Ocean Road where all those thousands of shipwrecks are? That would be fitting.

3. No, that's not a good location to set him adrift...
I think putting him in the shark-infested waters where the 'Children Overboard' Affair happened is much more fitting. And to top it off he could be put in a hastily built detention centre on some isolated island in New Guinea, just like they did to that poor Palestinian guy who's just been granted an entry visa after being the sole occupant of one of those islands for so long...

4. She's wrong...
Bush and his cronies have made it very clear with their threats and bullying over the past few days that Mark Latham would not be welcomed with open arms. And it obviously hadn't occurred to any of them in their arrogance that come November, they hopefully won't be in power, and it'll be a Kerry Administration that calls the shots. Hopefully Kerry will treat the alliance as the partnership it's supposed to be, and not the 'You Do What You're Told Or We'll Punish You' threats of the Bush regime...

7. Frightening people into voting for him worked once for Howard,
but I don't think it will again. It's an act of desperation.

He and Bush are like two cowardly boys, whistling in the dark.

8. There's every chance that little johnnie will be out this year....

but I'm terribly afraid that Diebold and ES&S will ensure President Mincing Pooftah will "win" the "election," regardless of how the electorate votes.

That will undoubtedly result in Latham being persona non grata at the WH and some very nasty things happening as Bush behaves as he always behaves towards people who have crossed him.

Even worse, if the US has opened its military base here by then, I'm terribly afraid of just how far Bush will go to force Australia into line. So far, there is no evidence of any limit to Bush's insanity.
