Baghdad Car Bombing Kills 12, Wounds 13

June 13, 2004

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb near a U.S. military camp in Baghdad on Sunday, killing 12 people and wounding 13, the military said. The explosion took place as a police patrol was passing about 300 yards in front of Camp Curvo, which is run by the 1st Calvary Division. The blast went off just after the officers had stopped the bomber, who was traveling in the wrong direction on the road.

Lt. Col. James Hutton, the spokesman for the 1st Cavalry Division, said 12 were killed and 13 were wounded in the blast. He said there were no U.S. casualties.

Among the dead are four policemen and the bomber, said police Capt. Abdul-Razzaq Kadhem.

"I think this is the last gasp of the terrorists," Kadhem said. "Iraq (news - web sites) will not die. We will survive this, we will survive this."

1. They all keep saying it is the
'last gasp' of the terrorists but in reality it seems more the begining of a whole new wave.

5. BUSTED: Americans planned to murder Muqtada al-Sadr who wants US out of Ir
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 06:43 AM by quagmire_iraq
(It has now come out that the US military actually printed up broadsheets announcing that Muqtada had been killed resisting arrest, and that some GI's jumped the gun and actually put some of those out in early April even though in fact, Muqtada eluded his American would-be murderers.)

Paul Bremer's recent attempt to ensure that the major Sadrist leaders are not allowed to run for parliament has the same goal. The civilians in the Department of Defense such as Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz probably went to war against Iraq in part precisely to get bases there. The realization that they might be tossed out at the instance of a few million Shiite slum dwellers has so infuriated them that they attacked the movement without provocation, killed about a thousand of them, and are now trying to disenfranchise several million Iraqis by disallowing Sadrists from holding office.

6. Hi, welcome to DU
Thanks for the article, but could you edit it to only four paragraphs. More than that breaks the rules about protecting copyrights.

Thanks again. :hi:

7. Really, the last one.
They mean it this time. The Iraqi people are going to realize any minute that REALLY, they have been LIBERATED.

Then the flowers and sweets will begin to fly . . .

8. "bushco* style democracy and freedom"....
ain't it grand?....

A mother wails at the sight of her dead son killed in a car bomb explosion as he is wheeled into the Kindi hospital in Baghdad. Senior officials and ordinary Iraqis bore the brunt of insurgent attacks here that cost at least eight lives, less than three weeks before the scheduled return of sovereignty by the US-led coalition.(AFP/Sabah Arar)
