Advance orders propel Clinton's memoirs to top of bestseller list
Sun 13 Jun 2004

BILL Clinton?s memoirs are to become the bestselling political book in American publishing history. The 1.5 million copies of the first edition of My Life, which will be published on June 22, have already been accounted for in advance orders, and Clinton?s publishers are racing to print a second impression.

<snip>

The public has already delivered its verdict, however, as the memoirs are the bestselling book on the amazon.com bestseller list. Only JK Rowling?s Harry Potter series has had pre-publication sales to compare with Clinton.

<snip>

Although he said "I don?t settle a lot of old scores" in the book, the former president, who received a $10m (£5.5m) advance, has revealed that he had to pause while writing chapters concerning former special prosecutor Ken Starr, whose hounding of the President and his associates still fills him with rage.

<snip>

"A lot of presidential memoirs, they say, are dull and self-serving. I hope mine is interesting and self-serving. I don?t spare myself in this book," he said. "I take on a lot of water for not just the personal ... but the political errors I made and how they came to be."

5. They also made it okay to disrespect Presidents.

This morning at my senior center I asked why they had postponed Friday's movie in honor of a movie star. I was rebuked thusly: "He wasn't just a movie star, he was a President. We shouldn't be disrespctful of Presidents. RR loved his wife, and he never made a porn movie."

I didn't say that it was his 2nd wife, and that refusing porn in those days was just sensible for a person's career. Instead I said that I had been raised to be respecful of presidents. Many presidents in my time had affairs or mistresses, and many people knew about it, but the media and everyone else kept silent out of respect for the president. However, after the Clinton stuff, I realized that times had changed and it was perfectly alright to disrespect presidents these days. One has to keep up with the times.

7. Fabulous!
I'm reading Kevin Phillips' ideas of how a Bush got back into the White House after the last one left with such low ratings. One of the things he says was instrumental was that memories of how much he'd been disliked faded over time as people became more fixed on Clinton's problems. The same thing is happening with Clinton to a very much larger degree, imho.

It sounds as if this book is going to start its own firestorm, right when we need it. :bounce:

17. What a decade of lies...to catch him in one lie, we had to endure
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 06:49 PM by higher class
ten years of their lies and innuendos 24 hours a day. Oh the drama of their plight to catch a duly elected President and get him out of office. Oh, the massiveess of the orchestrated character assassination in the new era of right wing state run propaganda conducted by batallions of host and guest experts and government paid FBI and Secret Service employees working with the right wing. Oh, the cost to the taxpayers. Oh, the wasted months of the life of a female - time spent in jail for nothing.

And now we're going to get an old fashioned hold it in your hands book that will finally give us some insight into the man they tried to assassinate on air and continue to assassinate.

How many of his friends and government employees had to lose thousands and thousands of dollars by paying legal fees to stand up to the right wing?

How many good deeds could have been accomplished using the time spent trying to defend against the right wing?

How deep in brown stuff are we because the son of the son and his handlers just had to go out of their way to do the opposite of what Clinton did?

Well, we know the legacy even now - today. They are shamed. And the country is in worse shape because of them. And they demeaned the role of government paid employees by their actions in exposing a private matter.

But, we know that there are people out here who can think and lead the country, unlike the current one.

18. Exclusive: Clinton On His New Book
Former President Bill Clinton will discuss his upcoming memoir, "My Life," in an exclusive interview with Dan Rather to be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, June 20, 2004, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

The much-anticipated 957-page autobiography will be published by Alfred A. Knopf on June 22.

"It is the fullest and most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, and one of the most revealing and remarkable memoirs I have ever had the honor of publishing," said Sonny Mehta, president and editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf, in a statement issued in May.

"He talks with candor about his successes, as well as his setbacks, looking at both his career in public service and his life."
