The White House is rejecting calls by .(stem cell)

06-14-04

WHITE HOUSE -- The White House is rejecting calls by former President Reagan's family to change its policy on stem cell research.

Press Secretary Scott McClellan says flatly, "The policy remains the same." He adds, "We are looking at other ways to combat disease."

Reagan's widow Nancy and his daughter Patti Davis have been outspoken advocates of expanding medical research using embryonic stem cells. Biologists think these could help create treatments for diseases ranging from diabetes to Alzheimer's, which afflicted Reagan for a decade.

McClellan says Bush believes his policy still provides enough lines to continue research.

in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the Great Pumpkin.

14. that's what makes no sense to me either
who is he to stop this research. It does not seem within his purvue or powers as president at all. He is indeed a dictator. I don't know how he got that power, but he sure should be struck down on this restrictive and dictatorial decree. This puny little coward of a teeny prick has the power of life and death over chronically sick people and the power to send some of them to an early death because he claims to be a Christian? He loves this--he loves thinking he has the life of other people in his grimy little cowardly hands. This is what makes him think he is powerful--dictating to people on issues like this.

3. Keep it up George
Maybe I'm grasping at the straws here, but if they won't budge on the stem cells, Kerry may get his own October Surprise: an endorsement from Nancy Reagan.

6. In that case...
..they can ban IVF - the means by which these stem cells are obtained in the first place - in which fertilized ovum that are not used are simply discarded (gasp!) like so much garbage.

Hey, pro-life means pro-life, doesn't it?

8. WH refuses to give up promising research on leeches
these newfangled science guys are heretics and should be burned at the stake for messing with the Will of God. If He had meant us to experiment on stem cells He would have made abortion legal.

9. Let the European's get ahead of us on this one too! The W policy
is going to keep us falling further and further behind enlightened countries. We are rapidly joining the ranks of other oppressive fundamentalist, oppressive regimes and will fall as surely as Rome, etc. Falling is the only thing that W knows about.

from foreign stem cell research will be cheaper than if done by American scientists, the bright side of ignorance.

"McClellan says Bush believes his policy still provides enough lines to continue research."

Like Bush is some kind of scientific expert. Think he could pass a grade school biology test?

19. What's strange is that Fundies
avail themselves of reproductive research – at least they seem to be the most visible whenever multiple births make the news. Now they want to dictate how others may or may not benefit from the leftovers.

23. boy you got that right!
They are so pro-life and anti-choice, even if they might have the need for this research. It seems the level of brainwashing is complete.

And to think I read a post elsewhere today where one of these types actually finally figured out the the IUD is a birth control device that actually kills the embryo. Duh.

I'll never stop wondering if any of these people know one thing about life, much less science.

20. Patti Davis has this to say in column in current Newsweek
For some reason this got locked in editorials.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5197841/site/newsweek /

<snip>

I also grew up hearing my father say that everything happens for a reason, even if we don't know what it is. "God has a plan," he always said. "And God does things in his time. It's always right even if it seems a mystery to us."

Until my father's death on June 5, I had no idea why God would have wanted him to last so long with a disease that stole so much. Why did his soul have to linger in a body and a mind that had been so cruelly conquered? Why did my mother have to go through year after year of drawn-out loss?

I think I know now. And I think my father is smiling and saying, "I told you there is a reason for everything." Because my mother now has a chance to make a contribution to this country and this world, arguably as important as those of my father's. She is the voice for stem-cell research now. But she found her full voice only recently; it was just a few weeks ago that she was publicly honored for her efforts—an honor that placed her firmly at center stage.

It has also placed her firmly against the White House—at least those currently in residence there. I swear I can hear my father chuckling at that.

21. Theres more to it-- thats not being said:
Bush has outlawed anyone, NO ONE, from the US is allowed to travel to a foreign country, such as the UK, for stem cell therapy.

I heard Chris Reeves say it, when Bush was considering whether to allow 'stem cell'therapy.
