Army Shows 1st Uniform Redesign Since '81
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/army_new_uniform

WASHINGTON - The Army revealed on Monday a redesigned combat uniform with a digital camouflage pattern that looks strikingly different from soldiers' current battle dress uniforms.

It marks the first major change in the Army uniform since 1981, said Brig. Gen. James R. Moran, who modeled the uniform for reporters at the Pentagon (news - web sites). He said recruits will be issued the redesigned uniform starting October 2005, and the entire Army will be outfitted by December 2007.

The uniform is being produced in a single, universal pattern to replace the two camouflage versions in current use: tan-brown for desert use and green-brown-black for woodland settings.

Soldiers also will get a new, no-shine, tan combat boot, and the current black boots will be discontinued.

The coat-trousers combination costs $88, compared with $56 for the current battle dress uniform

Who's bright idea was this, and how much money is this going to waste before they realize what a mistake it is - come on now - soldiers are going to get killed because of this.

It looks blue - great for the desert {/sarcasm}

I'm just getting disgusted that half my country thinks it is OK to torture and kill people because they are children of a lesser god.

I am seeing more instances of trailer park inbreds claiming that we can't win the war on terriers unless we destroy all believers in Islam.

The uniform pic seemed appropriate.

Besides which, they haven't accepted Jesus Christ as their personal lord and savior, so they deserve to die.< /sarcasm>

This will drive some grizzled non-coms nuts! When you're out there in the boonies trying to be quiet and you open a velcro pocket! Riiiiip! Oh that's going to be loud!

And they sure don't look all that camo to me.

To me it looks like some REMF's in the Pentagon with no experience in the field designed this uniform.

These arent the same as the new ones the Marines are using are they? They cant be because the Marine ones atleast look decent.

Damn why is the Army wasting money designing this piece of crap, just use what the Marines have created.

Of course there's an air of foreignness about them.

They're made to blend with the uniforms of the foreign troops that have been screwing around the US for a long time. My source on this is old, but the stories keep coming up.

I heard a sherrif in TX interviewed on 2 SW radio shows in 2003:
(infowars.com and americanfreedomnews.com iirc).

He had had a ton of complaints from people near the border, and the uniform was always unidentifiable.

With the new version, they'll be able to say, "that was our American boys", instead of "that was our new Czech friends" or whatever is the BS of the day.

The new uniforms are here to help take away whatever rights we have left.

59. Saves me having to look for a photo!
That's the first thing that struck me about the uniform: "Hey, it's just
like Star Wars".

On a more serious note, I don't think that the "continental" or
"foreign" appearance is coincidental ... this is moving towards the
anonymous "riot police" look and will mean that there will be little
difference between mercs and soldiers who've taken off their velcro
strips ...

Damn, I'm glad to have served on active duty when "Jesus was a Corporal." Way back before the Army's love affair with Velcro?!? Yikes! To quote my Nephew's favorite term, that looks *fugly.* I don't care if it's highly functional, they should immediately drop kick the designer back to the drawing board. :P

Great place to advertise the ranks of the soldiers...right in the middle of their chest! Does that say "Shoot here" or is it just me?

Even with the body armor, the rank in the middle of the chest is easier to see by someone looking though, say, a scope.

37. I can't believe it! Non-functional and sneaky.
The Blouse has a ZIPPER instead of buttons. Do they realize what a build up of sand can do to the functionality of a zipper.

Also Officers will NOT display their Branch Insignia. That's UnSat. How can we distinguish the infantry from the engineers. I guess that will allow the corrupt spooks (*some* MI Officers) to enter in-and-out of prison camps without notice (just another officer).

There's something vaguely "futuristic" about the design, in a theatrical way. Did something similar appear in science fiction movies from the fifties, say "The Day the Earth Stood Still" or "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers"? Maybe it's the collar.
