KIRKUK, Iraq (AFP) - Five Kurdish recruits to the new Iraqi army were killed and their bodies burnt after their car broke down near the mainly Sunni Arab town of Samarra, north of Baghdad, a Kurdish official said at their funeral in Kirkuk.
The five were heading north to their homes in Kirkuk after completing military training in Taji, just outside Baghdad, when their car broke down between Samarra and Berjil, both strongholds of Sunni insurgents sympathetic to Saddam Hussein's ousted regime.
They went to repair their car at a garage but were ambushed and their bodies were taken back to their car and burnt, said Jalah Jawhar, an official from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, one of the two main Kurdish former rebel factions.
"We will not cease in our hunt for terrorists or our opposition to terrorist acts," he said.
The funerals were held in Rahimawa, a Kurdish neighborhood of Kirkuk. The northern oil center has a mixed population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs and Turkmen, and has seen repeated communal unrest since the US-led overthrow of Saddam's Sunni Arab-dominated regime last year.
