BAGHDAD (AFP) - Shiite firebrand Moqtada Sadr could join national politics if he is found innocent of murder charges and agrees to disband his militia, Iraq (news - web sites)'s new president Sheikh Ghazi al-Yawar told reporters.


The rebel cleric, who has waged a two-and-a-half-month-old uprising against the US-led coalition, indicated in recent days he was mulling a deal with the new interim government to drop his resistance to the emerging political order.


Yawar praised the apparent thaw in Sadr's rhetoric.


"I kept on saying consistently that if I were in his shoes I would try to go to the political arena instead of raising arms. He has supporters, he has constituents, he should go through the political process and I commend this smart move on his side," Yawar said.

4. My heart aches for all of the troops that are dead or missing limbs

because of Sadr's militia.

First we bring that Baathists' back and now this. Yep, we are really showing strength. I didn't know "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" was a matter of foreign policy.

Edit: One more thought. It is so apparent that this administration is so desperate for things to "look good" in Iraq until November, they are seriously screwing up the future of that country. It is just one more example of how short sighted they are.

Al Sadr wants the troops out, and the "government" is not going
anywhere near such an idea yet. The "government" would be
crispy critters in the street within weeks without the foreign
troops. I wonder how the "truce" is doing anyway, have the
attacks stopped yet?
