No Christianity in new E.U. Constitution

BRUSSELS, June 15 (UPI) -- The European Union has rejected the requests of some member nations to recognize Christianity in its new constitution.

Seven nations, including Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic, urged the EU to refer to the "Christian roots of Europe" and explicitly mention Christianity and God in the constitution currently being drafted. The Vatican also made clear it wants a reference to Christianity in the Constitution.

However, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency Tuesday reported Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern decided not to recommend the Christian reference on Monday.

Former French president Valery Giscard d'Estaing prepared an initial draft of the Constitution that refers only to the "cultural, religious and humanist" traditions of Europe.

don't these yahoos understand that Christianity wasn't the only religion contributing to the development of Europe

the Moors in Spain; the Jews who would lend money when the Christians thought it was beneath them; etc

5. Good! Smart people over there...
Most of them were smart enough to conclude that there was no reason to invade Iraq. Now they are smart enough not to discriminate against the majority of non-Christians and non-believers:

7. Are there no Jews in Europe anymore?
Or are they less than 3% of the population?

10. That's not Europe, it's the whole world.
According to this website, there are less than 20 million Jews on the entire planet. Doesn't sound right to me...

12. That's the pie chart for the whole world
looking at the web page it's from, the worldwide percentage is about 0.25%. The same site has various estimates for Western Europe, Eastern Europe, etc., but they vary widely. It might be about 1 to 1.5 million in the EU - is which case the percentage works out about the same as for the world. The USA figure looks about 2%.

14. It shows religions of the world. Sorry for not making that clear.
It also has not been modified since 2002. So, there might be some slight changes.

I added the chart because some of the more fanatic Christians always think they are the only faith out there, or the only "correct" faith.

6. Congratulations to Europe; wake up, America
Religion is to politics as HIV is to the body: a rat that will not stay in its lair.

The best hope of the planet against the wave of fundamentalism sweeping it is to turn an iron shoulder against superstition. Stem the tide--or face life under theocracy.

8. There's a reason they won't get involved with religion.

Most of the countries in europe remember what happened when religion ran their countries. they want nothing more to do with that.

They'll leave it to us to discover the same for ourselves. Hopefully we will before the country is destroyed by religion.

13. Compare This to the SCOTUS's "Ruling" on "God" in the "Pledge"
Who'd have thought that the 21st Century would have begun with Europe, not the United States, stepping out far ahead in providing the planet with moral, tolerant and humane leadership?

The American people (not just our government, folks) are now widely perceived around the globe as spoiled crybabies, self-indulgent, lazy, ignorant, monolingual, religiously superstitious, militaristic and violent...and dangerous.

How far and fast we have fallen!
