Feds turn up the heat on Rowland

Jun 16, 2004 10:23 am US/Eastern
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Gov. John G. Rowland's former chief of staff has been put on notice to expect a federal indictment this summer, The Associated Press has learned.

Peter Ellef, who has been investigated as part of the corruption probe for more than a year, would be the highest ranking member of Rowland's inner circle to be indicted. Ellef oversaw several construction projects the FBI has been scrutinizing.

1. Rowland must be one egomaniac bastard
for not quitting. Either that or he's in total denial.

2. CT checking in here
The paper today had two full pages and then some, of reports on the testimonies yesterday. I think it is very important to remember that John Rowland is a close friend of George W. and Jeb Bush's and even appeared at the podium with them at the recent National Governor's Conference.

Rowland GAVE AWAY $230,000,000 of the state's trash authority's money to ENRON, interest free, as an advance purchse of energy we never received. A week after this little advance payment, Ken Lay throught a reelection party for Rowland, personally coughing up $100,000 for the affair. Both claim it was purely coincidence.

But the Rowlands were actually running in circles they couldn't afford to run in. The Bush's and Lay's were way out of their league. Even his personal secretary, it was revealed in the testimonies, repeated loaned him money when his checking account was overdrawn. They simply came to accept the "gifts" as part of their new lifestyle, and Rowland paid for most of them with lucrativce state contracts. Even his former driver was promoted to Homeland Security Advisor...presumably he knows the best roads out of town should the next big attack hit Hartford. This admimistration is so Bush-like it is scary. Rowland is one of them in terms of feeling entitled, in terms of arrogance and greed. He laid off thousands of state workers at Christmas time only to spend far state resources than saved in his efforts to stonewall the impeachment commission.

Rowland is just like Bush in one other regard, too. If he says it, you can be damned sure some part of it -- if not the whole enchilada -- is a lie.
