US likened to a 'whore'
Beijing - A top Chinese general on Wednesday called the United States "a whore" for suggesting that Taiwan try to destroy the Three Gorges Dam, while maintaining that it could never be hit by Taipei's conventional arms.

Lieutenant General Liu Yuan, the son of China's formerly deposed president Liu Shaoqi, slammed the Pentagon for suggesting that Taiwan was preparing an attack on the massive hydro-electric project as a counter measure to growing mainland forces aimed at retaking the island democracy.

"Some people who say they support democracy, wave the flag of human rights and shout about fighting terrorism, are actually a bunch of provocateurs, inciting nationalism and purposely and shamelessly provoking revenge without regard to consequences," he said in a front page editorial in the China Youth Daily.

"It is very clear, they are whores, masquerading as gentleman, and are willing to go farther than (al-Qaeda leader Osama) bin Laden."

14. Maybe so, but...
the Chinese gov't claims a larger airspace than international law recognizes. To intentionally fly into this zone would be perceived by Beijing as antagonistic.

12. Where Colin had to get on his knees and beg?
Yes, that was an impressive demonstration of American diplomatic incompetence. First threaten the most powerful country in Asia, and then after they tell you to fuck yourself, get on your knees and beg them to give your aircrews back.

15. George W. Bush gave China a very nice intelligence transfer...
He provided them with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to inspect one of our intelligence gathering planes and dissect classified equipment.

Forget the unsubstantiated intelligence cooperation allegations made against Bill Clinton by reputable news organizations like Newsmax....

George W. Bush is the real deal!

4. 3 Gorges Dam
How many whole towns were uprooted in the making of this, and how many more would be flooded with accompanying loss of life if it got blown up?

18. yes, this is non-nuclear MAD
Despite what the gent in the article says, I think Taiwan could technically succeed in an attack on the dam. It would cost many lives in the immediate flooding and long term damage in terms of energy supply and repair costs. It would be a crippling blow that would hurt for years and years.

So Washington voices the obvious and we're whores because such threats are supposed to be kept veiled, unvoiced and only vaguely hinted at. Too terrible to be discussed in public.

I think the Taiwanese would rather succumb to invasion or forced re-unification than face the Chinese reprisal for such an attack. I think the Chinese would rather cede a lot of autonomy to a re-unified Taiwan than to destroy it in an invasion. Would China want Taiwan once it's industries and infrastructure had been wiped out by Chinese missiles and Taiwanese saboteurs?

If you do a peaceful reunification then the Chinese Navy nearly doubles and its Air Force increases over 25%. The 'tensions' provide pretext for big military build-ups on both sides. And the U.S. is happy at the arms trade involved. But only so long as things remain tense or erupt into a war. If things were to get real friendly then there's suddenly a huge, advanced, combined military force over there with nothing to do - no more face-off.

Good for lots of juicy arms sales all over the Pacific and East Asia. I wonder how U.S, Israeli and NATO arms exports to the region rank compared to all other exports for that region?

5. Gen Liu says "whores" but he means "terrorists"
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 11:20 AM by berry
Look at this sentence:

"It is very clear, they are whores, masquerading as gentleman, and are willing to go farther than (al-Qaeda leader Osama) bin Laden."

US=terrorists, quite a clear statement. And not wrong either.

Let's hope that the Taiwanese and Chinese governments are both too smart to fall into US traps. (I rather think they are.)

on edit--oops. Should have read the whole article first. It looks as if the mainland is telling Taiwan to cool the rhetoric. But Liu's statement that Taiwan doesn't have nukes contains the clear subtext that the mainland *does*, and that they might use them against "terrorists" in Taiwan.

I admit to not paying enough attention lately. So the RW nationalists are back in Taiwan--they of course love the neocons, and the neocons love them. There really are a lot of neocons specializing in China--we've been forced to pay more attention to the ME specialists, but that doesn't mean these other creeps haven't been busy sowing chaos elsewhere. And if they think they don't have much time left or think a China-crisis could help Bush*, they may be going into high gear. Definitely scary.

19. So, can we get this general on the Democratic ticket?
I mean, he's accurate, articulate, and not afraid to take on Bush!

Okay, I know, there are a few problems. We might lose some votes because he's in the military.
