U.S. Acknowledges Violating International Law by Holding Prisoner in Secret

By Matt Kelley Associated Press Writer
Published: Jun 17, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - At the request of CIA Director George Tenet, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld ordered the military to secretly hold a suspected terrorist in Iraq, a Pentagon spokesman said.

The suspected terrorist has been held since October without being given an identification number and without the International Committee of the Red Cross being notified, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said. Both conditions violate the Geneva Accords on treatment of prisoners of war.

Rumsfeld ordered the Joint Chiefs of Staff to have the prisoner secretly detained on the day last October, when Tenet made the request, Whitman said.

1. So Rummy gave the actual order but Tenet resigned? I am glad that the
Bushies put such a high premium on personal responsibility. Such a refreshing change and a sign that the adults are in charge once again.

3. It was Bush order.....Tenet......finally gave up on lying for them
I have been in this situtation at work. You see all kinds of digusting stuff....but it is considered the norm....when you question it....you are chastised......so finally...you have had enough of the deception and lies and you quit.....

They made him take the fall at the 9/11 commission.....which was them...not him.....they are doing it again....

This is bush, cheny, rumsfeld, ashcroft, rice, etc.

4. Let me guess....
Tenet ordered it Rumsfeld was just the unwitting victim....thus teflon Rummy isn't at fault. He is doing a smashing job!

On the other hand, that damn Tenet. We got rid of Tenet because he was the bad bad apple.

Why is it I believe that there is probably documentation about Rumsfeld role and not Tenet? Just a hunch.

6. That's probably the condition accepted by the reporter in exchange ...

... for the early information obtained from HRF, whose report on this was released today. It's not unusual ofr any organization preparing to release a report and a press release to embargo early information given to the print media. (The print media has a longer time-to-publish than other media.)

The Human Rights First report is at http://www.humanrightsfirst.org/media/2004_alerts/0617.htm

Footnote: A 'GRAF' is a paragraph. I think those embedded notes got transcribed to the web by a clueless transcriber.

7. The "Tenet request" is a total red herring!
Ferkrissakes! The US maintains a whole network of secret detention facilities! There are an acknowledged 7-8 prisons in Afghanistan whose locations are kept secret! There's not a single prisoner in such camps that the ICRC can visit, since the ICRC isn't told even where they are let alone who's imprisoned! We're not talking about just one prisoner, here. We're talking about whole prisons! F*cking D'OH!?!

8. If Tenet made the request and Rumsfeld filled it, then ...
both are guilty. Rumsfeld should be fired, then both should be prosecuted.
