10. In Afghanistan, no less.
I wonder about Iraq.

Beyond criminal indictments, I imagine a mere handful of civil suits could break the backs of these merc companies. I would celebrate that!!

David Passaro, 37, was arrested today at his place of work in Lillington, N.C., sources said.

Passaro, a former U.S. Army Ranger, was to be taken to the federal courthouse in Raleigh, N.C.

So what mercenary firm is in Lillington, NC?

<snip>
A federal grand jury in Raleigh, North Carolina, returned the indictment, which includes two counts of assault causing serious injury and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/06/17/afghan.indictment/index.html

The U.S. Justice Department accused Central Intelligence Agency contractor David A. Passaro of beating an Afghan detainee who died in custody after being questioned about a rocket attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
<snip>
Passaro, 38, of Lillington, North Carolina, was charged with assaulting Abdul Wali during an interrogation last year after Wali was taken into custody outside a U.S. military base near the town of Asadabad. Passaro was accused in a four-count indictment of kicking and hitting Wali and beating him with a large flashlight on June 19 and June 20, 2003. He died in his cell the next day, the Justice Department said.

11. I feel sure
you will find a bunch of "security contractor" types in NC most especially around Fayetteville, home of SF and Delta. Lillington is only about 25 miles from Fayetteville. These guys get out of the Army, want to stay around the area because there are so many others of their ilk, start their own businesses or join ex-military buddies.

16. I screamed at the TV when Asscroft credited the Patriot Act for the...
...success of their investigation & indictment of this contractor being charged...

What shameless shits...they use every opportunity to justify the Patriot Act..

Try this one Asscroft: Maybe, if you all weren't controlling our corrupt policies (ie. the okaying of Torture) then maybe we wouldn't have to be using any "Patriot Act" to investigate people because IT WOULDN'T BE HAPPENING!

23. related article: Man Charged In Beating Death Of Afghan Detainee
http://www.nbc17.com/news/3431269/detail.html

<snip>

David A. Passaro, 38, is charged with two counts each of assault and assault with a dangerous weapon. Attorney General John Ashcroft said Passaro was accused of "brutally assaulting" a prisoner while questioning him over two days. The prisoner, identified as Abdul Wali, was being held at a U.S. detention facility in Asadabad, in the Kunar province of Afghanistan. Court documents say Wali had surrendered and was being questioned by Passaro about frequent rocket attacks directed at the U.S. facility, close to the Pakistani border.

Ashcroft said al-Qaida and Taliban fighters were common in that part of the region.

Wali died in his prison cell after Passaro beat him "using his hands and feet and a large flashlight" during two days of interrogations, according to a federal indictment.
