PAT (Buchanan) JOINS BUSH WHACKERS - (to release anti-Bush book in Aug)

PAT JOINS BUSH WHACKERS

June 17, 2004 -- JOINING the ranks of Bush-bashing books is one from a most unlikely source.
The Thomas Dunne imprint of St. Martin's Press has agreed to pay around $500,000 to Pat Buchanan for an anti-Dubya book to be called "Where the Right Went Wrong."

The proto-conservative will blast the Bush Administration for behaviors both domestic and foreign. He is particularly scornful of the U.S. foreign policy that has "ignited a war of civilizations" with the Islamic world.

Publishing insiders say Buchanan's thoughts on the 43rd president are surprisingly out of character.

"They could put Michael Moore on the jacket of this book, and people would believe he wrote it," one said.

The deal for world, audio and serial rights was made with Buchanan's longtime agent, Fredricka Friedman.

"Where the Right Went Wrong" is scheduled to go on sale in early August, to coincide with the start of the Republican National Convention — at which Buchanan will be a commentator for MSNBC.

51. Pat's been against the war for a long-time
When Buchanan and Press was still on, he used to trash Bush a lot about what they were trying to pull. I don't agree with some of his views, but at the same time he has OODLES more integrity than anyone in the WH.

56. Wow. Turns out I may have been right.
Nixon's "Dirty Tricks" against Political Opponents

Buchanan was not just another aide when it came to dirty tricks -- he was one of the leaders in pushing them. According to John Dean, one of Nixon's top aides, Buchanan relentlessly pushed underhanded methods, talking H.R. Haldeman's assistant Gordon Strachan into it, and even popularized the very phrase "political hardball." His view was that opponents would probably nail you, so you should hit them first, harder.

According to Anthony Lukas' book "Nightmare", Buchanan took part in Nixon's "Dirty Tricks" another way -- editing a phony pamphlet pretending to be from a liberal Democrats group that attacked Muskie. (His assistant Ken Khachigian wrote it.) Many investigators also think Buchanan or Khachigian wrote the infamous "Canuck letter", a forged letter claiming Muskie has slandered French Canadians as "Cannocks" (sic). The Canuck letter was one of two slams against Muskie that caused the Democratic front runner to break down crying in frustration at a New Hampshire news conference, crippling his candidacy.

63. I'm no Buchanan apologist, but...
half of the entries under the Buchanan "On Jews" section at this link relate to Israel specifically and not to the Jewish faith in general (the first two and next to last entries in particular; the last entry in the section is no worse than GWB comments on other religions - it is still reprehensible, mind you). I have plenty of Israeli friends who complain that the pro-Israel lobby in American does nothing to forward the true national interests of their country, much less their faith.

I will never endorse anti-semitism in any form (being married to a Semite myself!). But I have appreciated Buchanan's lone voice criticizing Israeli (NOT Jewish) actions that violate international law and basic human rights over the past few years.

23. Historically true.
I haven't heard anything from him on the subject recently, but his anti-Semitism is pretty well known. That's NOT to characterize any criticism against Sharon and Likudniks as anti-Semitism, either (if that's what you're getting at). That's an entirely different matter to me.

BTW, for those who wonder where that "criticism of Israel = anti-Semitism" meme came from, here's a little link I like to haul out every chance I get (and the whole article is well worth reading!):

Halper: Yes. Anti-Semitism feeds on the idea that Israel is a victim. The Foreign Ministry of Israel invented a new form of anti-Semitism in the last few years called the 'New anti-Semitism,' and they then found some professors willing to give it some academic credibility. The New anti-Semitism that is now being spread all over says that any criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism, period. And it has been very effective.

20. Buchanan made a costly error in 2000.
He had the opportunity, which I expected him to take, to really decimate the neo-conservatives coalesced around Bush. He did not do so, fearful of Gore. What an error... Interestingly, a Gore presidency would have been much better in some ways for the real, non-"neo," conservative movement.

...of anti-Bush books out there now but what I was thinking was that after he's out of office not only will there be even more but that all kinds of scandalous info that we don't have now will probably be in them. Not that there is any shortage of scandals now but just imagine when Bush is gone and folks in Washington start to feel that they can breathe a little easier. For every scandal we know about now there are probably at least three more that we don't know about. Just wait.

I'm sure there are many, many conservatives who have many more Dark Nights of the Soul since Team Bush stormed the White House.

Hell, I've spoken to some of 'em!

There's nothing to bring Liberals and Conservatives together better than some real, fanatical, autocratic Fascists. Why do you think so many Democrats are pining for John McCain to run as Kerry's VP?

Cherish this political moment. Even as the juggernaut tramples on laws, morals, nations, and peoples, we have a truly rare opportunity to re-discover what America is all about, with our friends AND with those we'd normally be tussling with.

And that might be Bush's real "legacy".

36. Buchanan Helping Nader "Take Away" Votes From Bush
Patrick Buchanan Interviewed Nader for The American Conservative magazine. Buchanan has obviously decided to help Nader "take away" votes from Bush in 2004.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

June 21, 2004 issue
The American Conservative

Ralph Nader: Conservatively Speaking

The long-time progressive makes a pitch for the disenfranchised Right.

Ralph Nader recently accepted Pat Buchanan’s invitation to sit down with us and explain why his third-party presidential bid ought to appeal to conservatives disaffected with George W. Bush. We think readers will be interested in the reflections of a man who has been a major figure in American public life for 40 years—and who now finds himself that rarest of birds, a conviction politician.

Pat Buchanan: Let me start off with foreign policy—Iraq and the Middle East. You have seen the polls indicating widespread contempt for the United States abroad. Why do they hate us?

Ralph Nader: First of all, we have been supporting despots, dictators, and oligarchs in all those states for a variety of purposes. We supported Saddam Hussein. He was our anti-Communist dictator until 1990. They think that we are on their backs, in their house, undermining their desire to overthrow their own tyrants.

TAC: You often mention corporations. What is the theory behind this or what are the alternatives to corporate economic power? I presume you are not talking about state ownership or socialism, or perhaps you are …

RN: Well, that is what representative government is for, to counteract the excesses of the monied interests, as Thomas Jefferson said. Because big business realizes that the main countervailing force against their excesses and abuses is government, their goal has been to take over the government, and they do this with money and politics. They do it by putting their top officials at the Pentagon, Treasury, and Federal Reserve, and they do it by providing job opportunities to retiring members of Congress. They have law firms that draft legislation and think-tanks that provide ready-made speeches. They also do it by threatening to leave the country. The quickest way to bring a member of Congress to his or her knees is by shifting industries abroad.
