Bush Gets Boost From McCain on Iraq
Before cheering troops, President Bush got a strong endorsement on Iraq and a boost for his re-election campaign Friday from Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican courted by Democrat John Kerry to be his running mate.

McCain said of Bush: "He has not wavered in his determination to protect this country and to make the world a better, safer, freer place. You will not yield, nor will he."

8. One more time
There was never any chance McCain would accept. It was a political maneuver to embarrass Bush. When the WH is in trouble, the call on McCain. They've done this before.

16. Well, the political maneuver to embarass Bush backfired
because Bush embarrassed Kerry today by having McCain stump for him!

19. LOL! The move only revealed Kerry as Bush-lite.
Your fantasy of why Kerry courted McCain is baseless. Quite to the contrary, he courted the fanatical conservative because polls showed that together they could win.

That Kerry would run with an anti-choice, pro-war right winger is the very measure of an unprincipled "New Democrat"--a pol who knows the price of winning, and the value of nothing.

McCain is a Repub. He has campaigned with Bush before. He's also made clear he will not criticize Kerry because they're good friends.

23. My thoughts exactly .... They begin to tank and they call the guy they ..
Spat upon during the 2000 primary ? McCain has a long view of history. he may be a good Republican, but he's not through being a royal pain in Bush's ass ... IMHO .... He is owned by no one.

And hurt Kerry ? I don't think so ...

10. Sometimes ...
it makes you wonder if Republicans are loyal and devoted "team players" OR just outright brainwashed tools for their leadership. Today I believe the latter. Thank goodness I'm not a Republican! ;)

22. No, he just says "Vote for Smirk"
Last time I checked, Smirk was running against Kerry. So when McCain says "Vote for Smirk", he is also saying "Do NOT vote for Kerry". McCain routinely calls Smirk "a great moral leader" and praises his abilities as Commander In Cheif.

If McCain really was a maverick who opposed the far right control of the GOP, he would have run against Smirk in the GOP primary. Or he would be running as an Independent, and trying to get other GOP moderates to defect to a third party. Or he would be campaigning for Kerry. At the very least, he wouldn't campaign for Smirk. McCain would claim he had health problems or family problems and sit silently on the sidelines and let Smirk sink or swim on his own.

But he's out campaigning for Smirk because - - hello! - - he wants Smirk and his cabal of far right Republicans to win. The fact that Smirk stole the South Carolina primary from McCain doesn't matter to McCain - - McCain just smiles and calls Smirk "a great moral leader". Because whether Smirk wins or not, McCain wins tons of brownie points with GOP grassroots for standing by their divinely appointed candidate in another razor close election. McCain solidifies his standing as the obvious GOP frontrunner for 2008.

And I'll repost something else blindingly obvious for the nth time: Everybody who praises McCain as a man of integrity, a special case who is above partisan politics makes it that much easier for McCain to convince people to vote for Smirk.

29. It was completely laughable to think McCain would ever remotely
Consider running with a Democrat...Take the cotton out of your ears and LISTEN he told you so more than once...What really upsets me is that we don't need a republican on our ticket we have many fine upstanding competent people we don't need to run a Rethug....If Kerry is half as smart as I think he is he didn't really ask him....

12. McCain has been Bush's Arizona campaign head for months
What do you expect he would do? Resign as head of the campaign? That would be a big embarassment, so John stays on for the good of the GOP

15. Right
This would be the same GOP that has allowed the neoconservatives to take over the party, and as of yet have done little to nothing to take it back.

Why some ask, it's simple, it's all about the power, the control, and the ability to blame the neocons should things start to go down the toilet.

But as long as the neocons are getting the "party faithful" what they want, the GOP members will look the other way and ignore what is being done in the name of the Party.

And this describes McCain as well, he may say a few mean words directed against the neocons from time too time, but he too enjoys
the reins of power. This also shows that McCain's so called integrity
is questionable, would anyone here stay faithful to a group that has dragged your families name through the mud? McCain does, and this only shows that even a man like John McCain can be swayed by power and control.

Even if McCain does not say anything bad about Kerry, as is common with his party, it will be implied that since he's praising the Shrub,
then he must be saying that Kerry cannot do the job. And let's face facts, just using Iraq as an example, we have seen the GOP and their great use of "implied intent", even without any credible evidence.

14. ""He has not wavered in his determination to protect this country and to.
make the world a better, safer, freer place. . ."

Tell that to Paul Johnson's grieving family. Or to Nick Berg's.

I can't believe how many times I heard wingnuts accusing Johnson of cashing in on the war by going to Iraq. They were totally oblivious to the fact that Johnson had worked in Saudi for well over a decade (by some reports for several decades) or that he had been kidnapped there.

Saudi was a relatively safe (though oppressed) place prior to our illegal incursion in Iraq. Let's not lose sight of the fact that his kidnappers and killers stated that they were doing what they were doing to avenge the abuse of prisoners in Abu Graib.

". . . a better, safer, freer place.. ." yeah sure

18. Have you all finally figured out that McCain is NOT a secret Democrat?
The adulation pouring over this man for months and months from the Democrats has been embarrassing. Just because a republican is criticizing the republicans, does NOT make him a democrat. McCain is a crusty old GOP jerk who loves to hear himself let loose with zingers, doesn't matter who it is. I still can't fathom WHY anyone thought McCain could be anything but a right winger.

He's been on Bush's side for months and months, campaigning for him. The fact that he's kissing ass on the very people that attacked him so viciously and personally during the 2000 primary says A LOT about the guy. I think that he has not given up the idea of running.. and he's kissing ass so that he can be considered a team player for the 2008 run... OR he's going to be the GOP surprise VP candidate when Cheney takes a powder for health reasons.

McCain was ON Daily Show months ago complaining about Bush's handing of the war on Iraq.. now he thinks Bush is fucking military genius. Who's the flip-flopper?

I STILL don't believe that McCain was ever seriously offered a slot as VP by Kerry. I think the whole thing was manufactured by Rove.. a brilliant political move. Fuckheads.

20. How silly are you McCain fans feeling now?
Is your dream of a GOP-DLC ticket in cinders, or will you go courting other Republicans now? Surely you can find another right winger to help you woo the God-fearin', invasion-lovin' suburbs. You know, Lieberman still doesn't have a date for the prom. . .

(Some of us, of course, were always thinking of voting for Democrats. If the ticket can come up with one, that is.)

26. Man. I just had a chilling thought...
...whst if this is something more than just an endorsement, out of the blue, by McCain - think about it: people have been speculating that crash-cart has too much baggage to run with chimpy again, so, what if.....

...I don't like the possibility of what a chimp/McCain ticket would do to the undecideds.

30. Just saw that on TV and had the same exact thought. Dump Dickhead
and bring in McCain. I don't have good feelings about Kerry's chances.
Last night I couldn't believe it when Aaron Brown said 57% of Americans feel things are going better in Iraq. Also that Bush had pulled ahead of Kerry a couple points in the polls and the electoral
vote looked even better for Bush. I just don't get it.
