Senate Republicans Set Showdown on Gay Marriage

By Thomas Ferraro

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans announced on Friday they will seek a vote to ban same-sex marriage next month, forcing Democrats to stake out positions just weeks before their presidential nominating convention.

While many Republicans admit they lack the votes to pass the proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Democrats charge they are pushing the ban largely to rally the Republicans' conservative base and divide voters.

"We don't consider this as a divisive issue," Sen. Wayne Allard, a Colorado Republican, said in rejecting such criticism at a Capitol Hill news conference.

"Support for this amendment comes from a cross-section of America," said Allard, chief sponsor of the measure, which would define marriage as a union strictly between a man and a woman.

4. Bastards!
The future will remember those troglodytes for what they are: shameless political Neandertals willing to sacrifice the rights and pursuit of happiness of a minority for simple political gain.

Some days I wish there really was a hell.

6. I think all the Dems should vote present
and then defend that vote by saying that the Repubs are just playing politics and they don't want to play that game.

7. Aren't you happy they have time to deal with this?
Edited on Fri Jun-18-04 02:23 PM by geniph
I mean, obviously if they have the time to concern themselves with the private lives of U.S. citizens and their marital status, then we no longer have problems like war, poverty, famine, crumbling infrastructure, a deteriorating economy, a damaged environment, a healthcare crisis, increasing religious fanaticism, terrorism, lack of investment in education, etc., etc. I'm so happy they've solved all THOSE nasty problems so now they can concern themselves with making amendments to prevent two people who love one another from making lifelong commitments, aren't you?

19. Minor disagreement - If they're not willing to "play politics" they
should quit.

I think all the Dems should publicize the week before that they will walk out of the building and will skip the obviously petty political vote. By doing so the amendment will pass as a repuke only bill and the Dems should "play politics" with that. They need to refer to the bill as Orrin Hatch Hates Fags Amendment and say they will not participate in incorporating HATE INTO THE EFFING CONSTITUTION!!

9. Strategy: it's not about gay marriage. GUARD THE CONSTITUTION!
My talking point for the day-

Arguing in favor of gay marriage will only serve to energize the base.

Arguing that the GOP is pissing on the Constitution will resonate with EVERYONE.

If we make this a CONSTITUIONAL issue, not a social one, we'll make this petty political stunt backfire all over the Republican leadership.

10. Senate Republicans Set Showdown on Urinating on Tuesdays
Jeebus. Don't these rodents have *anything* else to worry about?

We've got an American who was beheaded today by al Queda factions in Saudi because Duhhhhbya was too busy swimming about in the Iraq qWagmire that HE created, wasting time, billions of dollars, and innocent lives there instead of actually *doing* anything about terrorism.

Of course Duhhhbya won't TOUCH the Sauds (though 16 of the 18 terrorists on 9-11 were FROM there) 'cause they're his family friends, which F911 will document.

Because of the bu$hit Iraq debacle, the world hates us now worse than ever, and I fear that these types of acts (and much, much worse) against Americans at home and abroad will now only increase.

And Senate Republicans are worried about GAY MARRIAGE? HOW UTTERLY PETTY CAN THEY GET! Do they NOT have anything more important to DO?

13. I don't know either.

Should Senate Republicans captured by Iraqis be forced into gay marriages? Should people married to Republicans be considered torture victims? Isn't marriage unConstitutional under the Freedom of Association clause?

Sometimes these political things just go right over my head.

17. Is it any of your business?
That is usually my rule of thumb. Is it really any of my business what other people do in the privacy of their homes if it does not hurt anyone? Who am I to say who should be allowed to spend the rest of their lives together? Bush*'s tax policies have hurt me personally very deeply. That I will voice my opinion over. Gay Marriage doesn't effect me in the slightest.

They care nothing about love and respect. They would personally love to see a black man hanged. They need violence to obtain arousal-- (See Johnny Asscrack)
