PM pushes election on terror
JOHN HOWARD has accused Mark Latham of increasing the risk of a terrorist attack by promoting a foreign affairs policy of isolation and retreat.

In an extraordinary pre-poll attack, the Prime Minister last night set foreign policy at the centre of the election, directly accusing the Labor leader of damaging the alliance with the US, which gave Australia "unrivalled" assets to destroy terrorist networks.

"Mr Howard is again making an exaggerated and untrue claim," Mr Latham said.

Jack Rabbit accuses John Howard of increasing the risk of terror by promoting the invasion of a sovereign state that had no ties to terrorists.

While Bush and his motley crew invaded Iraq, Osama and his motely crew were regrouping.

7. US alliance 'on the ballot'
John Howard last night declared Mark Latham would endanger the American alliance, in a major foreign policy speech that elevates the US relationship as an election issue.
<snip>

He said Mr Latham had overlooked the fact that September 11 had led to a "fundamental shift" in US calculations of the risks it was prepared to accept to its national security.
<snip>

He said there was a great deal of overlap between the Democratic and Republican leaderships about how the US should behave in Iraq and Mr Latham was out of step with Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's views.
<snip>

Labor's foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd last night dismissed the attack, saying Mr Howard was "simply in desperate search of an election issue".

9. What Howard and his goons seem to forget
is that the 'Alliance' is made up of three countries - Australia, New Zealand and US - the ANZUS alliance. NZ's prime minister Helen Clark refused to send troops to Iraq, and yet the 'Alliance' did not collapse over that. A previous NZ PM David Lange created NZ a nuclear-free zone back in the '80s (no nuclear-powered US/other warships are allowed enter NZ waters), and yet the 'Alliance'remained. All this pontificating just makes Howard look like the desperate whining fool that he is.

And thanks Newyawker for the welcome, definitely an education being here.
