Researchers say white bread makes a person rounder
By Ira Dreyfuss, Associated Press Writer | June 19, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Many Americans are like a loaf of bread -- soft, with one side round. Their choice of bread may be part of the reason.

Some researchers say white bread and other refined grains seem to go to the gut and hang out as belly fat.

"Waist circumference was very much associated with this high-refined grains pattern," said Katherine Tucker, an associate professor of nutritional epidemiology at Tufts University in Boston. She and other scientists are studying what happens to the bodies of people who eat lots of refined bread.

The researchers have tracked the eating habits of a group of healthy, largely middle-age people in Baltimore. The focus is on 459 people with a variety of eating habits. Some prefer refined grains; others favor whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

4. I've noticed there is a study a week
Edited on Sat Jun-19-04 09:55 PM by shraby
about why people gain weight. Maybe it's because they are made overly concious of what they are eating? If someone is on a diet, about all they think about is food..not cause they are hungry, but it's "do I have what I need on the diet in the cupboard", or "what can I eat that's on the diet", or "how many calories have I had today and how many can I have for dinner", or "what will taste good, still fits on the diet and others will eat", ad infinitum.
Also every new study that comes out puts something off the menu and something else is good for you. I've given up even thinking about it. I've watched my Mother, my Brother, my Sis-in-Law, my Grandmother all diet all their lives and all for naught. Still the same or larger than when they started. I'm going to just enjoy life and live without worrying about it. I'm not skinny so don't think that's why.

5. Refined Grains Are Bad For You...
Your liver turns it into sugar, then fat.

Simple sugars raise triglyceride levels - and that's the stuff that clogs your arteries.

Its the whole basis for Atkins/Sugar Busters type diets.

Sweet corn and corn tortilla chips are not good either. Too much simple sugar.

One needs to eat whole grains like barley, quinoa, oats and complex sugars from fruit and veggies.
