Judge Declares Abu Ghraib a Crime Scene
Judge Declares Abu Ghraib a Crime Scene

AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A military judge Monday declared Abu Ghraib (search) prison a crime scene and ordered that it not be destroyed — a move President George Bush (search) had offered to help remove the stain of torture and abuse from Iraq.

The judge, Col. James Pohl, issued the order during a hearing for Sgt. Javal Davis (search), one of three defendants who appeared in court Monday. Pohl also refused to move the case from Iraq as Davis' lawyer had requested.

President Bush had offered to tear down Abu Ghraib and build a new prison to eliminate the legacy of torture and abuse that the facility developed during Saddam Hussein's rule and later because of the current scandal.

Iraqi officials showed no interest in the offer, and interim President Ghazi al-Yawer (search) said destroying the facility would be a needless waste of resources.

1. Good, because it is a crime
scene and destroying it would destroy evidence. Chimp thought he could have it torn down and forgotten. It should stay there as a monument to the evil that was done there by Saddam and Bushco.

2. Agreed, the prison should stay
Not that there is any evidence left there, but maybe.
Yes it would be a big waste of resources to tear down and rebuild. Goofy shrub thinks the war chest is unlimited.
Thanks to this judge and also the interim president for showing intelligence.

7. Yup, I'm pretty pleased with this news as well.
It's probably true that there isn't much evidence left now, but still - this would also have been nicely covered up. I am glad to see people opposing this madness.

3. Bush made that up for his speech, about tearing Abu Ghraib down
and threw all the soldiers for a loop. The soldiers who are now stationed at Abu Ghraib thought, after hearing the speech , that they were being deployed elsewhere, because Bush made up that statement ON HIS OWN , and we stopped sending packages to Michael at Abu Ghraib, where he is stationed, because we assumed he was being deployed to the south of Iraq.
NOW we all find out he ISNT being deployed, that Abu Ghraib ISNT being torn down, and that Michael will continue to stay there.
Michael was FURIOUS in his email that Bush made this up for his lame speech and it really screwed the soldiers, their families, and everyone else who was sending packages to the kids.
The sheer cruelty of Bush to so easily make up ignorant, callous, off the cuff statements such as the one he inserted into his speech
"Abu Ghraib will be torn down", again re iterates to me that Bush is a meglomaniac, a psychopath, a tyrant, and a bastard who thinks he can be a frigging dictator and throw words around with NO regards to the families of service members, or the servicepeople themselves.
He isnt a King, he is a seriously and mentally ill fratboy in the White House and needs to be removed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE before he does ANY more harm.
and bring the troops home NOW

8. Don't link Faux--AP story. Plus they want to call Bush*
Not even their story. Here's link via Yahoo:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&e=3&u=/ap/20040621/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_prisoner_abuse

The story has been significantly updated. Graner'a lawyer wants to question shrub and Rummy:

Judge Declares Abu Ghraib a Crime Scene

1 hour, 19 minutes ago Add World - AP to My Yahoo!

By FISNIK ABRASHI and JIM KRANE, Associated Press Writers

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A military judge on Monday declared the Abu Ghraib prison a crime scene and said it cannot be demolished as President Bush had offered, while defense lawyers in the prisoner abuse case indicated they want to question Bush and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld

...

"We can't have American soldiers in a war zone questioning the legality of orders," Guy Womack, the civilian lawyer for Graner, told reporters.

Womack said there was "a good chance" he would seek to question Rumsfeld. He said he doubted he would try to depose President Bush, although "certainly we will be considering it."

...

"We would like to interview Bush because we know as a matter of fact that President Bush changed the rules of engagement for intelligence acquisition," Bergrin said Monday.

He did not elaborate, and it was not immediately clear what the changes he referred to.

....

Much more there--this is not just about the * lies about tearing down the prison. The Judge is letting Snachez and Abizaid be called.

The story gets into England's trial and the indictments and possible sentences for each.

15. Related story from the BBC: Generals face Abu Ghraib hearings
From the BBC Online
Dated Monday June 21 11:27 GMT (4:27 am PDT)

Generals face Abu Ghraib hearings

A military judge has agreed that the defence team of a US soldier accused of abusing Iraqi prisoners will be allowed to question leading American generals.
He ruled that the head of US-led forces in Iraq, Lt Gen Ricardo Sanchez, and other senior officials could be summoned as witnesses.
The ruling came at a hearing into the case of three soldiers charged with abuses at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib jail . . . .
The initial hearing in Baghdad was intended to resolve any legal technicalities before they face a full trial.
