ROWLAND TO RESIGN

Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland, for months the subject of investigations into alleged corruption in his administration and facing possible legislative impeachment, will announce his resignation Monday night, an administration source told The Associated Press.

The governor was planning to announce his resignation on a live television address to the state at 6 p.m., the source said.

Rowland, a three-term Republican who faces a federal corruption probe, has admitted accepting gifts but has denied providing anything in return. During cross examinations, his attorneys have portrayed the gift-givers as longtime friends and say the hearings have failed to establish evidence that warrants his removal from office.

Rowland challenged his subpoena to testify before the committee. On Friday, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that Rowland must appear.

32. Here's some choice grafs...
(My comments in BOLD)

Rowland was once the nation's youngest governor -- he was 37 in 1994 -- and considered a rising star in the GOP. He is a former chairman of the Republican Governors Association and was rumored to be considered for several positions in the Bush administration (No doubt that his gift for accepting payola put him HIGH on the list).

O'Neill said he had not reached a conclusion yet on whether to recommend Rowland's impeachment.

When he first took office, Rowland made $78,000 a year, was paying alimony and supporting a large family -- three children from his first marriage and a second wife with two children -- when his much wealthier friends and state contractors began to give him a taste of the finer things in life.

Lest we forget this dickbag was at one time the Chairman of Bush's state re-election committee!!

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/local/state/hc-08020902.apds.m0985.bc-ct--bushjun08,0,4164377.story?coll=hc-headlines-local-wire

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Connecticut Republicans, trying to get President Bush re-elected amid Gov. John G. Rowland's gift-taking scandal, appointed two national leaders to replace Rowland as chairman of Bush's state re-election committee.

Why won't that damn librul media use the VLWC-approved headline - FORMER bush* CAMPAIGN CHAIR RESIGNS IN DISGRACE

7. Lets hope this is the start of a trend.
Over the next 2 months we could see Rove and Scooter frog marched. Bush and Cheney as un-indicted co-conspirators kissing off any hope of even running in 04. Tom Delay in ethics hearings. And if we're lucky Rush being charged with drug trafficking. SWEET!

9. here's another article with interesting clips
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-usconn0622,0,1515665.story?coll=ny-top-headlines

excerpt:

Rowland was once the nation's youngest governor -- he was 37 when first elected in 1994 -- and considered a rising star in the GOP. He is a former chairman of the Republican Governors Association and was rumored to be considered for several positions in the Bush administration.

But 2003 began badly for Rowland and rapidly descended into nightmare.

<snip>

Before being elected governor, Rowland had served three terms in Congress and two in the state House.

Only seven governors in U.S. history have been impeached and removed from office. The last was Arizona's Evan Mecham, a conservative former car dealer whose campaign accepted a secret $350,000 loan from developers. A campaign finance charge was dismissed, but the unpopular political outsider was impeached in 1988 on an unrelated charge of trying to thwart an investigation into an alleged death threat made by a state official.

Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 10:25 AM by havocmom
His stock probably just went up with the puppetmasters.

edit: typo and to add that if voters started remembering that impeachment is an option, they might just demand Congress start doing its job of maintaining some credibility in government and holding the malAdministration accountable for its record.

28. I have to say though
Even though what Rowland did was stupid, cheap, and totally illegal... I think the idea of him making Rove and the boys look bad is a little funny, don't you? I think I'd rather have a small-time crook than the current gang of near-fascists we're dealing with in the administration.

He's just a small (minded) cog in their big wheel...

16. This is what I think will happen after he resigns....
Not only will he end up with some cushy corporate job for resigning like a "good soldier", Jody Rell will get in and various corporate powers that be will feed some extra dollars into our state to make her look good and in two years, she'll end up re-elected by the dense people of our state. That is unless the Democratic state party around here decides to grow some nads and actually fully SUPPORT the candidate chosen to run against her in the primaries. Why did this solidly blue state elect this corrupt weasel to three terms is beyond me.

19. Jodi Rell has that issue of her son...
I need some help here, but the details are something like this: her son was 'found' to be in possesion of a stolen jet-ski on Candlewood Lake. The bigger blot was the way the CT DEP officer(s) was dealt with - either fired or put on administrative leave (like we have enough DEP field officers that we can let them go for doing their job?) but then quietly re-hired when a scandal began to foment.

My facts are somewhat fuzzy here- maybe some in better control of the real facts can provide a link?

Tut-tut

26. I don't think finding a new job will be that easy, actually
I happen to know one of his old bosses... I don't think they feel they could afford the stink if he went back there.

I agree the Dems have been absolutely spineless during the elections for governor. Curry can seem a bit stuffy, but he's a smart guy, and got NO support.

What are the chances that the feds will still find Rell implicated in this -- at least by knowing it was happening? I have to say, I'm not thrilled by the prospect of a Kevin Sullivan as Gov. either. A little new blood sounds good just about now.

Here we have a corrupt piece of shit republican mired in scandal, and we don't hear anything about it until the guy resigns. Rewind to the recall in CA--Davis, though not the best governor, did NOTHING illegal and he was removed from office in a full-blown media circus. Yep, librul media.

Is there a Lt. Gov. who will replace him?

I'm just curious if there has to be a vote so the Ct. people can really tell the Pubs how they feel, of if they'll have to wait for an election?

38. Personally, I think it sucks
I would have preferred that he be impeached. I wonder how many other Repugs he would have taken down with him if he were impeached? You know he wouldn't have gone down without a word. I wonder if Rove said anything to him along the line of "Resign or be abandoned by the party." Perhaps the promise of an appointment as an ambassador or something, should the Pugs win in November.

I personally would have preferred all the gory details to play on the news, either just among liberal news or mainstream, as Rowland was impeached. It would have been lovely.

Yes, I've gotten cynical. With the evil regime currently running our country, it's difficult not to.
