'Twentieth hijacker' in September 11 plot held in Guantanamo
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200406/s1137073.htm

The mysterious "20th hijacker" believed to be missing from the group of terrorists that took control of US passenger airplanes on September 11, 2001 is being held in Guantanamo Bay, The New York Times reported today.

Saudi national Mohamed Al Kahtani, 26, was captured in Afghanistan in December 2001.

It was only in July 2002, officials told the newspaper, that FBI agents matched his fingerprints with those of a man turned back after flying to Florida from London in August 2001 without no return ticket or hotel reservation.

Airport surveillance cameras that day showed a rental car used by the hijacker leader Mohamed Atta entering an airport parking lot just before Kahtani's flight arrived, officials told the newspaper.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations sent an experienced counter- terrorism agent fluent in Arabic to Guantanamo to interview Kahtani, and over months of conversations he eventually got him to admit that he was going to join the hijackers.

a double negative? so what are they saying?

Unfortunately, our inclination to notice such things makes us snobs.

On edit: That doesn't mean we're bad people.

3. How many 20th hijackers were there?
Seems to be almost as many as them as there are "masterminds" running loose.

20. I had the exact same thought as soon as I saw the headline...
Is this the third or fourth "20th highjacker" they've pulled out of the hat since 9/11?

4. Wasn't Mossoui supposed to be the 20th hijacker???
When did this guy take his place? I just have to shake my head, if they can't build a case on one, well, just find another one and make him the one.

Of course, they've caught several "9/11 masterminds" also.

9. That's what I thought, too. It is routine for them to change the legend.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/americas/1704616.stm

But I think they are adjusting their house of cards (the 9/11 legend) from time to time.

The very interesting article Truth, lies, and the legend of 9/11 by Chaim Kupferberg proves this in detail for the role of the "paymaster" and the "mastermind" of the attacks.

6. Is that like being "The 5th Beatle"?
Highly suspect. Just as the announcements that come after somebody is killed or captured. They immediately become an extremely important terrorist mastermind, whether or not anybody had actually heard of them.

Conversation??? Of course, over coffee, no doubt. Torture, nooooo, forbidden word becomes "conversation"! Geez.

14. Well so now we should be informed
who the other 19 hijackers were right?

I mean even someone like me who can barely think have a hard time believing that 19 people go on a suicide mission (usually suicide means death) and 9 of them turn up alive and 6 of the 19 had lived on US bases and the leader of the fanatical religious Muslim gang lived with off all things a white hippie hooker across the street from a strip club where he went to unwind with a few tall ones after a hard day training how to fly a kite.

I MEAN HOW HARD IS IT TO GET SOMEONE TO CONFESS AND NAME NAMES WHEN YOU ARE INSERTING TUBLIGHTS UP HIS BUTT?

16. It would make a good name for a rock band
"The 20th Hijackers". There must be enough of them by now for at least a rock band. I don't doubt there will be an entire symphony orchestra eventually.

17. 2 more hijackers needed to form
The Guantanamo Hijackers expansion NFL team, assuming of course you aren't going for the full 54 man roster. If so, you may need to go to Abu Ghraib...

I swear, anybody with an Arabic sounding name who gets picked up is claimed to be the "20th hijacker"!

US officials have overstated value of Guantanamo prisoners

NEW YORK : US officials have vastly overstated the value of the nearly 600 detainees being held at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the New York Times reported, citing interviews with high level US and foreign military, intelligence and law-enforcement officials.

The assertions clash with statements by the government of President George W. Bush, which has maintained -- as Vice President Dick Cheney once put it -- that the Guantanamo detainees are "the worst of a very bad lot" of foreign terrorists.Advertisement
US officials have said that information obtained in Guantanamo have halted Al-Qaeda attacks and produced vital information about the network.

But officials told the Times that Guantanamo detainees have provided only a tiny amount of intelligence of current value. <snip>
