Calls for Blair to Quit
The Prime Minister is facing calls to resign from delegates attending the annual conference of Unison, the country's biggest trade union.

A series of motions are set to be discussed criticising Tony Blair and his government for pursuing a "reactionary right-wing agenda".
<snip>

Mr Blair will also face criticism over the "occupation" of Iraq and for pressing ahead with foundation hospitals despite opposition from organisations including Unison.

The call for Mr Blair to resign will be opposed by Unison's leadership when the motion is debated on the opening day of the conference in Bournemouth.

2. Won't happen...
If he quits then the "stories" which "convinced" him to support Bush will come out...

But, if Labour manage to get rid of Peter Mandelson (Bliar's puppet master), there might be a chance...

5. Peter Mandelson
MP for Hartlepool (in the North-East) & so is a "Monkey-hanger" (dates from the Napoleonic times when their people hund a monkey cos they thought it were 1 of Napoleon's spies! :) )

He's one the people who helped get Bliar the Labour job & turn Labour into Tories-lite (All the taste & only 1 calorie)

V. smarmy & arrogant - like Bliar, only doesn't claim that people should trust him & so he's actually worse! :o

Not sure bout UNISON, only think that they've been promised summat if they support Bliar

7. Mandleson?
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 12:10 PM by Thankfully_in_Britai
Often known as "The Prince of Darkness", "new" labour's original spin doctor and notorious for his machavellian tendencies. VERY close ally of Tony Blair, often seen as the architect of the famous 1997 Labour landslide. Mandleson is however, disliked by many many people, both inside and outside the Labour party.

Mandleson was twice made a cabinet minister by Blair, and twice forced to resign over sleaze allegations. He was also the man originally in charge of the Millenium Dome project.

8. Blair courts middle classes with reforms
<snip>
Members of Unison, one of the big four, condemned the Prime Minister as "an arrogant warmonger" and a "liar" but stopped short of calling for his resignation. More than 2,500 delegates at the union's annual conference voted by more than four to one against calls for Mr Blair to quit, but not one speaker offered support to the Prime Minister or his policies.

Blair's opponents link up

Tony Blair was warned by the head of one of the "big four" trade unions yesterday that the group is to mount a campaign to return Labour to a more traditional agenda.

Dave Prentis, Unison general secretary, predicted that high levels of cooperation between Amicus, T&G, GMB and Britain's largest union would prevent the party hierarchy dividing and ruling its opponents.

The Unison leader raised the prospect of a return to in-fighting between old and New Labour in the run up to next year's expected general election when he said the big four would press home a common agenda at next month's party policy forum and September's annual conference.

"We will not keep our heads down, gobs shut for Labour, if this government continues to put forward rightwing policies," said Mr Prentis at Unison's conference in Bournemouth.

Unions go sceptic on EU constitution
<snip>
Mr Simpson, whose union has 1.35 million members and just last week gave Labour £500,000, said the PM could not count on the backing of Amicus because the government had not done enough for workers' rights.

He said: "It will be very difficult for any trade union leader to persuade their members to be voting or campaigning for the constitution if it only creates a businessman's Europe, and not a working man's Europe.
