WASHINGTON, July 9 — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is reassigning a senior official who has come under criticism from members of Congress and the F.B.I.'s own director over his apparent retaliation against an employee who had publicly criticized the bureau.
The official, Robert J. Jordan, who currently oversees internal disciplining as an assistant director at F.B.I. headquarters in Washington, will become special agent in charge of the bureau's field office in Portland, Ore. No date for the move has been announced.
Mr. Jordan, now one of about a dozen assistant directors at headquarters, will become one of more than 50 special agents in charge of field offices around the country.
But officials said the reassignment was not a demotion and was not a result of recent criticism over his performance heading the Office of Professional Responsibility.
