'Fahrenheit 9/11' a hot flick in Dallas
03:44 PM CDT on Friday, June 25, 2004

BY APRIL KINSER / DallasNews.com

Dallas may be deep into Bush Country, but Fahrenheit 9/11, the controversial documentary intended to drive the president from office, still attracted hundreds of moviegoers Friday to the film’s opening.

The documentary questioning President Bush’s actions before and after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks brought filmmaker Michael Moore’s ardent supporters in droves to select theaters locally and across the country. The film looks at the relationship between the Bush and Bin Laden families and apparent failures of the president’s handling of terrorism. It also raises questions about the U.S. war with Iraq.

snip:
Fahrenheit 9/11 is showing in about 750 theaters nationwide. By 1:30 p.m. Friday, the Magnolia had sold 1,000 tickets and managers expected it to be the biggest weekend since the theater opened 2½ years ago.

“The only time I’ve seen anything with a stronger response was The Blair Witch Project,” said manager Tearlach Hutcheson, who was being followed Friday by a film crew documenting the excitement. “I would be willing to compare it to some of the big Hollywood films like Spiderman.”

snip to the end:
Jeremy Devine, the national marketing director for Rave Motion Pictures in Hickory Creek, said the theater also beefed up security and had received mixed feedback on the decision to show the film.

“About 60 percent of the e-mails we’ve gotten have been negative,” Devine said. “Even to the point where people say they will never see a movie at our theater again.”

48. I live in Frisco, it IS Freeperville - wow!
For others reading: Frisco is a suburb of Dallas that makes Dallas city proper look as Democratic as San Francisco.

Hubby & I saw F9/11 in Plano (another suburb north of Dallas) at the Angelika, most showings sold out and the theater was PACKED until after midnight! I nearly died from the shock of it all!

wow, wow, wow - I thought I had died and gone to Dem heaven last night, after a VERY LONG stint in Purgatory. Who knew there were so many closeted Dems in this part of N Texas??? Everyone clapping and cheering - I thought the planet had reversed polarity or slipped it's axis.

Skittles, did you see it at AMC Stonebriar? If so, was it crowded?
We went to the Angelika in Plano because I just assumed it wasn't actually showing in Frisco (heard later that night it was at Stonebriar).

73. The Missus & I Know the Feeling!

We just got back from not seeing it! :D We bought tickets for the 12:30 showing tomorrow, though.

It's fabulous! I stood by the ticket wincow and listened as patron after patron after patron was turned away with "Sorry, the 3:30 show is sold out. 6:30, also. We have a few left for the 9:30 show..."

At a theatre which has eight screens, EVERY person in line (except one guy) wanted to see F 9/11!

It's just as well we didn't get in today... the Missus isn't feeling very well, so I brought her home and she's resting, now, with a topically applied kitten to soothe her aching head.

But she's all gung-ho to see it tomorrow. To quote Moch in the comic strip Mutts: "Me, too also!"

because you may not realize it as I do, but Eau Claire is a very beautiful name for a city ! In french at the least it's very beautiful, poetic and sounds really great. Many french cities have important historically speaking names but not as beautiful as this one and far from it. Lucky citizens of Eau Claire! :D

Sorry for jumping in.

EDIT: Just finished to read the whole thread. I wish so much I could have been in USA to share that moment in a theater with some of you.... Thank you really Mr.Michael Moore. This how a Patriot Acts ! :)

saxon world than Eau Claire is in the french speaking world. It's hard to explain but it really sounds like a "New World" name. In old Europe (France, Swiss and Belgium) names are not as clear as this one is. Most of the locations names are very hard to understand because they are very old and finaly don't sound as nice as this one sounds(wisigothic transcription of an old celtic name translated before in latin and then finaly re-transcripted in "french" during the 16th century for exemple, and each name has his own history. For exemple, a well known name in USA :Manche is the french name for the Channel but very few people can say without a search what Arromanche means for exemple, and finaly it doesn't sound very nice in french) .
Names in the New World (Quebec and USA) are more modern and seem made of a more close and human poetry. Very touchy most of the times.

EDIT: sorry again for disturbing the thread. But it's a pleasure for me if I can help american friends to know a bit more my beloved country so you must stop me. ;)

65. Eau Claire gets its name from a river
that mostly flows through postglacial alluvial sand deposits, and so is very clean and clear. It flows into the Chippewa River, which is a navigable tributary of the Mississippi. The city of Eau Claire is sited where the Eau Claire River joins the Chippewa.

I've never seen an audience interact like that. I had complete strangers come up to me make comments after the film. Strangers sitting near each other would make comments about the scenes and lines and laugh together. It was great.

Went to the 4:00 show and they made us move across the hall to a larger theatre. When I came out they had added extra shows in the smaller room. Guessing demand was 2.5X what they expected.

13. My review, Friday morning show San Jose CA. Theater FULL
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 06:30 PM by dArKeR
1. Walking in usher stops man with Double Big Gulp drink in his hand. Usher says, 'you cannot take in outside drinks.' Customer says, 'Oh gee, sorry, I haven't been to a movie theater in a decade. I just bought it, can you give me a break.' Usher reaches for drink and throws it away. Customer says, 'you know this is the reason I'm going to see this movie!'

2. Some customers inside, as we did either, didn't know these plastic looking things were fold down armrests to put arms and drinks inside.

1 and 2 show some of the crowd are NOT movie goers.

3. Morning show was almost completely full. I could see people with work 'badges' in their front pockets. Looks like a bunch of people took an early lunch

4. The movie should NOT be rated R. It's a PG and this fight should be taken to court! Pure GOP control over whatever board does this or they are afraid to be assassinated by the Bush Crime Family. In my little TV time I've seen 100,000 times worse language, violence, killing, body parts being severed on Family shows and cartoons and the news.

5. Many many (most) audience were crying, at times most audience were laughing. The entire theater errupted in applause at one point in the middle of the movie.

6. Moore address the issue of Bush Sr. was at the Carlyle meeting with the Bin Laden family but didn't clarify what time Bush left the meeting. I don't think anyone knows and Bush Sr. should be asked this.

7. I loved it and I think everyone walked out of there afraid. Afraid for the future of America.

8. As we walked out, the lunch time show, 70 people were sitting in line on the floor waiting to get in.

9. Daschle is portrayed as a spineless Democratic leader. (Which I posted 2 years ago on the DU. I don't care if he has to get elected. It's time the Democrats clean house. Take the loses and then put someone in who represents moral America!)

10. I think this could drive aWol to insanity because he's going to know everyone has seen it. Everytime a person looks at him he's going to know they know he's a mindless fool.

I advise not to wait. Go when the theater is full! It's like being in a DU theater chat room. Everyone we met were friendly and courteous and some people chatted together after the movie.

My last observation to pat myself on the back: Nearly everything I saw in that movie was already my personal honest feelings which I formulated independently from the time of the first report I read in Newseek? which said, 'It seems like he hasn't read a book since he read Shoot the Moon when the twins were three.' (I read that on the internet pre-election 2000... to the things I hear on O'Franken today. I say, 'hey, I've been posting that idea on the DU for 3.5 years.' Then I realized we just sat with a theater full of my kind of people who have been thinking the same things for 3.5 years.

I hope every takes the time to donate a little to Kerry before the June 30 cut off.

18. I think the movie is excellent, but
I do think that there is justification for the R rating. The footage of real violence and injuries is something that some parents will not want their kids to see. I am comfortable with restricting it such that kids need to go with their parents.

19. What violence are you talking about?
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 06:36 PM by dArKeR
I don't like to talk about the movie so not to ruin it for others. But the part which was stated for the 'Official' reason for R rating, the dead little girl being put into the vehicle to burry her, this happened so quickly I didn't even know what happened. I didn't see any imagine. I only knew what it was afterwards because of reading the report.

Are you talking about some Itchy and Scratchy violence?

(Not being rude to you.)

24. The bombing footage, but mostly
the close up of the inside of the arm. Also, soldiers with limbs missing etc. There was a lot in the film, so it is hard for me to remember all of the things I think are not appropriate for a kid to see alone, but it was enough to shake this adult. I think a kid should have an adult there so they have someone to discuss the film with later. Footage of real violence is a lot more powerful then what is usually in films, in my opinion.

25. Concerning parents going with their children...
I agree that a parent should be present with their young child.

This is how I responded to a parent who thought that her 12 yr old possibly shouldn't see F9/11. I saw worse when I was 4. I posted this to another thread:

I'm not a parent, but I would take my children if I had any.

My parents NEVER censored what I watched on TV or in public. Mind you I was raised by a professor and and artist. I saw the Vietnam WAR (I was younger than your daughter at that time), Watergate and occasionally extreme violence (not gratuitous) or sex. I also watched peace protests and America's reaction to the violence. My parents discussed this openly with me and put it into perspective.

As a result, I HATE WAR! I marched as a boy in protests, I campaigned for Jimmy Carter and wore a sign in parades though I was too young to vote - because I hated Nixon. These feelings were not necessarily handed to me by my parents. I came to my own conclusions which surprised them and made them speechless at times... they are still speechless because I am very open about my politics (shockingly at times), politically active on the local level, and have kept them on their toes.

You may find someday that your daughter will hound you until you write letters to Congress, though you may feel like: "I've already done that - I paid my dues - I'm retired now, etc." Today, my father is compelled to use his intellect and education because he trained me that way when I was a child, and I'm constantly reminding him of that directly or indirectly through my actions.

These are my thoughts and please don't feel pressured by my little story.

and I missed a lot between crying and laughing.

12. I sort of consider myself a 'radical' a 'peaceful debate internet radical'. I was sort of surprised to hear so many people vocally cursing Bush and his Crime Family during the movie. I think a lot of people were truely disgusted to their souls with Bush.

13. I wish Moore would have tied in the Repbuplican leadership. No matter what is written by the Whore Journalists, none of Bush's insane thoughts could have materialized without the 100% support and knowledge of the entire Republican leadership. Lott, Hastert, Delay, Frist, Hatch and every Republican committee chairman. EVERY Republican leader knew and/or contributed to Bush's Butcher plan. All of the Republicans have the murder of our children and the Iraqi children and adults on their souls!

14. That Repuke Operative who called into O'Franken, the one who is trying to stop the movie, the guy who hasn't seen the movie but read the transcript. And only the transcript prompted him to his actions? Much of the movie is facial expressions.

15. I think MoveOn should organize some people to hold signs outside the Theater saying, 'Please donate to Kerry before June 30 cutoff'.

Who thought of this? There should be an investigation to this too! Talk about torture! In that heat, 100+, having your nose and mouth muzzled and then another thick bag put over your head. Bush and the entire Republican leadership should be tried for War Crimes and put into prison! Our country is sick and the whole world can see it. Our Media are nothing but Whores and/or puppets of the Republican Elite.

38. Good turnout! about 40 seats not taken in a theater seating 330!
Applause at the end (I can't remember the last time I heard applause at a movie!) Nice mix of older, younger, male, female present. No disruptive elements at all; laughs in spots, sharp intake of breaths at others (that Stoic element in West Texas, after all!)

Local news interviewed some folks coming out, one of which was a former student of mine who gave it a glowing review!

All good!

20. It's about sold out inside the beltway.
I got one of the last ones at AMC Hoffmann in Alexandria. www.movietickets.com is getting a workout today. I hope my order took.

The AMC Courthouse in Rosslyn, VA appears to be almost sold out through Monday!

29. just got back form the 7:30 in dallas
at the loews on 75 and spring valley. i bought the tix a week in advance and its a good thing because i got there 30 mins early and they were SCALPING them! i was wearing my "anyone but bush" tshirt and people kept coming up to complement me on it.

no protesters, though. i think i would have been more than a little scared to protest around this crowd.

this thing's big...

event. Damn them. Go to www.bugmenot.com if you still are interested in reading it. IMHO it is a take it or lose it article. I snipped the best, I think. F911 sold out last night all over Dallas, that is not good for Bush and says lots for his home and his "base".

37. Wausau, WI theaters won't show that KIND of film
We will be having a protest, we just need to get it organized. I am so sick of this facsist crap I could throw up.

For Columbine I had to drive to Madison to see it, about 2 1/2 hours. The sad thing is that Appleton, which is more conservative then Wausau is showing it.

40. Dallas Morning News--unbelieveable
Front page article: Fahrenheit 9/11a hit in Plano, Dallas.

From the article: "Bush-bashing film applauded during debut at N. Texas theaters"

Also, but on page 7 of section B: "North Texas moviegoers who went to see Michael Moore's Bush-bashing Fahrenheit 9/11 on Friday had a lot of good things to say about the file--and not a lot of good things say about the president."

The article went on to print reactions of eight people, ranging in age form 21 to 72 (of those who would give their age) Samples of reactions: "...this made me realize what a monster is." "It opened my eyes..." "... a piece of art, a wake-up call." "...best thing I've seen since the Vietnam protests." "I'm sad that there was a cause for a movie like this to be produced....It makes it clear how easy it is for a great mass of people to be manipulated." "I can't imagine his bing re-elected. Yes, I think the movie's biased. But everything involving politics is biased."

42. Sold out in Lynnwood Washington!
Crowds lined up around the theater! (Shades of "The Passion...."!) Took my 14 year-old son. Lots of young people. Plenty of conversations while waiting in line. Great flick! Tell everyone you know! Oh yes, the beheadings mentioned earlier? Saudi TV showing LEGAL executions in the Kingdom!

49. Define Irony...
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 03:53 PM by The Animator
Farenhiet 9/11 is playing in the AMC theater at Pleasure Island. I know that it was AMC's call to show the film there, but even after Mirimax was ordered not to distribute the film, it is still being shown on Disney Property.

FYI there are 9 theatres showing this film in the Greater Orlando area alone.

52. I saw it at the grand
Around maybe 30 seats empty. I passed out 100 flyers afterwards (ran out), but couldn't do it as people exited the theater. One other guy who did was escorted out by police, so I did it in the lobby & outside.

I think maybe that was better anyway, because some people who weren't even aware of the movie asked me what it was about, and said they wanted to see it after I told them. I also passed out voter registration forms to anyone who needed them.

I wish I'd have brought 200 flyers!

56. Sold out in SA
I tried to go to the 4:30 show at the Quarry in San Antonio, and it was sold out...so I bought tickets for 7:00...arrived at 6:30 in hopes of getting a good seat, but had to stand in a LONG line just to get in and was lucky to get a seat on the third row...the audience ate it up and applauded at the end...an even longer line was waiting to get into the 9:30 showing.

57. Saw it in Frisco
. . .and Michael Moore rocks! :headbang:

For those of you who don't know, Frisco is a little Freeperville suburb north of Dallas. (I live in Plano which is a not-as-little Freeperville which is also just north of Dallas.)

The theater was packed and the audience was totally receptive to the movie. I heard two boos but they were comically pathetic. I'm going to go see F911 again in a week or so.

If anyone in the Dallas area knows of a good activist-progressive group I could help out, please contact reply in thread. I'm also going to start a new thread asking the same thing.

Peace.

63. Ah shucks - the 60% who said they would never go to that theatre will
show up if Arnold and Charlton or Arnold and Bo make a movie = especially if it has blood and killing with a theme of self-righteiousness and American supremismand with a touch of prison support and fancy killing toys - combined with their versions of morality and purity.

“About 60 percent of the e-mails we’ve gotten have been negative,” Devine said. “Even to the point where people say they will never see a movie at our theater again.”

“About 60 percent of the e-mails we’ve gotten have been negative,” Devine said. “Even to the point where people say they will never see a movie at our theater again.”

I would like to suggest that readers here thank those theaters that went ahead and showed the film. I'm sure that the numbers above are an inaccurate representation of how well received the film really was. If left as is, this unchallenged response could cause theaters to distance themselves away from controversial movies, like this one, in the future. We had asked them not to buckle under pressure and censor this film, so I believe it is appropriate to show those theaters appreciation for taking a stand and going ahead with the showing of the film and also to make them aware that those who appreciate it *are* the *majority*.

Thank you.

71. Sold out in Rochester NY
I presumed there would at least be seats, but no. We have several theaters in the area, including an arts theater, so I WILL see this film yet. My son beat me to it.

You can kiss NY goodbye *.

The national news reporting has been despicable in its aim and intent.
And utterly transparent to those who have tossed out the Bush mauve tinted glasses.

Just wondering. We are planning to see it again this coming weekend and taking several more friends, even a few we don't know. Everyone needs to take someone to see this, even if they have to take them kicking and screaming. Just don't use torture, okay. And that depends upon your definition of torture, apparently as long as you don't intend to cause pain/and or suffering then everything's okay.

78. Dallas is an INCREDIBLY conservative city.
I think the fact that F9/11 is doing well in Dallas may be a VERY good indication of a sea change.

Of course, I could be wrong. And maybe at this time of day I'm kick-happy.

Do you have friends and or family here? Are they safe from the fire you wish to see fall? If so well, send us good thoughts okay. By the way, have you seen F911 yet, if so where and what kind of audience was with you?

82. Research Triangle NC. Still south of Mason-Dixon.
Friends and family still in the Big D have absolutely nothing to fear, as my efforts, to call fire down from the heavens, have met with surprisingly little success so far.

F911 is showing at five (?) theatres in the Triangle. Went Monday night: not a packed house (unlike the weekend). I think a lot of people there Monday were unsurprised (Triangle has pretty educated population); no disruptions, fairly restrained laughter, somber (but perhaps not stunned) by the end. Maybe I was just there with the choir.
