Hitler Reappears in '04 Campaign, This Time in Bush Ad (NYT!)
By DAVID E. SANGER
Published: June 26, 2004

WASHINGTON, June 25 - Suddenly, Adolf Hitler has become a bit player in the 2004 presidential campaign.

President Bush's campaign Web site is featuring an advertisement casting Senator John Kerry and his allies as a "coalition of the wild-eyed," blending clips of former Vice President Al Gore, former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont and the filmmaker Michael Moore shouting about Mr. Bush. Interspersed twice are images of a shouting Hitler, drawn from a Web spot that MoveOn.org, the Internet advocacy group that runs anti-Bush advertisements, briefly posted months ago in a contest for advertisements about the president.
<snip>

Mary Beth Cahill, Mr. Kerry's campaign manager, sent out a fund-raising letter on Friday accusing the Bush campaign of "losing any last sense of decency" by posting the new advertisement.
<snip>

Kerry campaign officials said that MoveOn.org operated independently and that the campaign had nothing to do with the posting of the Hitler images on MoveOn.org's Web site.

1. Bush is comparing himself to Hitler - how strange!
Did Karl Rove go on vacation and leave Bush in charge?

They got all high and mighty when a couple of the ads on Bush in 30 Seconds made reference to Hitler/Bush comparisons and now they're doing it. What the hell?

47. Yes, but I started it all about three years ago..
with my "Bush is not a Nazi - so Stop Saying that!"

http://66.230.230.110/geeklog/public_html/staticpages/index.php?page=20040601225012523

at Take Back the Media.com

they'd thought it was MY animation and invited me on Scarobourough but in the end they played my ARMY OF ONE ad on MSNBC and LOVED it..

I was all ready to attack over hate speech, "feminazis" "Hitlery Clinton" etc and even brought a baby pacifier as a prop to hold up on camera for the Republicans..

but instead Joe the Scar like our MoveOn ad..

pass my flash around, might as well put some more poop in the soup :)

They are now speaking their own (visual) language and have lost the public.. they are toast and don't even know it..

54. I remember& thanks, symbolman--you're simply the best
I loved that spot and the rest of your stuff too, and of course any fool can see the similarity between the Fuhrer and the Fony, at least as far as the political phenomenon that kind of ascendance to power is (named to power by an unelected entity & so on) So it is driving me nuts that Dems can't respond vigorously to this atrocity at the Bush site -- the freeps just shoot back that it's moveon footage & suddenly you have to be on the defensive.

I'm thankful they haven't put it out as a tv spot yet--too extreme, I guess! They'd reveal their cravenness to many more folks if they did that.

Their website is a dark little corner of hell, isn't it?

http://www.thegiganticheartlessmultinationalcorporation.com/id676.htm
(snip)
MLK "A time comes when silence is betrayal"

Prescott Bush financed Hitler, GHW killed 4.73 million, "W" only 10,000 deaths so far.
Re: I do not understand the us goverment -- uwe
Posted by Jolene , 02/09/2003, 08:36:09

Prescott Bush (President's Grandfather) financed Hitler into
power from 1922 onwards and had his assets confiscated by the
US Government in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act.
That was Prescott Bush's contribution to 54 million deaths.

There are similarities between Hitler invading Poland and Bush invading Iraq:

1. Each happened simply because just one warmonger politician decided to invade.

2. Both events had the Bushes behind it (Hitler had Prescott Bush from 1922)

3. Hitler only invaded Poland once, and killed less Poles than Dad Bush killed Iraqis. (Dad killed 200,000 in the war, 1.5million with sanctions - UNICEF)

4. Both Hitler and Bush chose a defencess nation to attack.
(The Iraqis could never attack America, can't and never have killed
Americans)

5. Both Bush and Hitler own the world's biggest military machines.
(There over 1,000 times more Weapons of Mass Destruction in the
USA; isn't that where the Weapons Inspectors should be sent?)

6. Both Hilter and Bush seized power by usurping the electoral process.
(Bush brothers destroyed 250,000 Democratic votes in 4 electoral frauds
in Florida, declared "W" the winner by 537 votes.)

4. Wait a minute...
This can't be real.

Are you serious?
Bush using Hitler in a campaign ad?
Juxtaposed with pictures of Kerry, Gore, Gephardt and Micheal Moore?

Are they insane?

I watched this and I thought, are they crazy?

What's worse is I watched it as Joe Scarborough was playing in the background on a re-run, screaming about how Fahrenheit 9/11 was a "bunch of lies" and tried to discredit everyone who had anything positive to say about it.

HITLER on a sitting Presidents campaign website?

This is so freakin' huge I can't believe that this ad was placed on there by anyone other than a hacker.

Are you serious?

Are they that crazed?

This should spell the end if this hits the major news networks.

Once America sees this ad, and Fahrenheit 9/11 in the same weekend, this clown is done.

John Hinkley could not have done a better job.

20. Amazing! Hitler, then Bush
I can't get any sound with this clip so I can't hear what they're saying, but it was astonishing to see the shot of Hilter saluting, which segued into a shot of Bush in the same pose.

Watch it with the sound muted - these shots really stand out then.

These repugs are nuts. This makes them look really bad.

...thought they were being effective at countering the "outrage" with some outrage of their own and not realizing that it backfires...Leaving out Hitler in this video clip would have been not only a "higher ground" position, but it would have gotten the message of "Pessimism and Outrage" as it relates to their view of the Democratic Party and Kerry, versus putting in the film that had shots of Hitler that were taken from a "contest submission to MoveOn.org".

The problem is they are clearly amateurs and don't understand that the images of people angry w/ Hitler and then showing Bush emerging, actually leaves a correlation between Hitler and Bush, not the Democrats...so actually its pretty funny...

Bush in the end of the clip looks like "Hitler reborn and emerging"...

Your reference to the Dentist made me laugh!!! Especially since I have a Republican Dentist that canceled my appointment on June 11th for Reagan's funeral....I started going to him because a good friend had recommended him...funny thing is that the friend is so liberal and this dentist is scary right-wing....even Jerry Garcia used to go to him and Bob Weir and the rest of the band does too...I figured its because he turns up the laughing gas to 11, but he's getting to scary that I'm worried he's going to go Drugstore Cowboy on us all...The other day when I got my teeth cleaned, he told me "how dare they call Bu$h a liar - if he lied, I wouldn't support him"....I didn't say anything....I just hoped he'd be done quickly and I could leave...

shown by the dems here and the cheesy platitudes of bush at the end with the "happy happy" music only serve to show the viewer how they are being decieved and placated by the shallow, "happy music" facade that is bushes' whole appeal. This commercial emphasises that bush is the triumph of style over substance- of slick PR work over competence. exactly what we are trying to get the people to understand. 5. email from Bush* campaign about ad
Apparently, the Republicans are glad they're winning the race to the bottom:

Subject: We agree, it's disgusting

Dear e,

On Thursday, the campaign launched a web video titled Kerry's Coalition of the Wild-eyed.  The video featured Democrats who support John Kerry making negative and baseless attacks against the President.  Interspersed in the video were segments of two ads that appeared on a website sponsored by MoveOn.org - a group campaigning for Kerry - in January.

On Friday night, John Kerry's campaign denounced our use of these ads, and called that use "disgusting."

The Kerry campaign says, "The use of Adolf Hitler by any campaign, politician or party is simply wrong."

We agree.  These ads, like much of the hate-filled, angry rhetoric of Kerry's coalition of the Wild-eyed, are disgusting.

• Where was John Kerry's disgust when he hired Zack Exley - the man responsible for encouraging the production of these ads as part of a MoveOn contest - to run the Kerry campaign's internet operation?
• Where was John Kerry's sense of outrage when Al Gore, just yesterday afternoon, compared the Bush Administration to the Nazis saying, "The Administration works closely with a network of 'rapid response' digital Brown Shirts who work to pressure reporters and their editors for 'undermining support for our troops.'"
• Where was John Kerry's anger when Al Gore in May spoke of "Bush's Gulag"?
• Why has John Kerry not denounced billionaire and Democrat Party donor George Soros for comparing the Bush Administration to Nazis. Soros stated, "When I hear Bush say, 'You're either with us or against us,' it reminds me of the Germans. It conjures up memories of Nazi slogans on the walls, Der Feind Hort mit ('The enemy is listening')."
• Why has Kerry not spoken out against filmmaker Michael Moore who last October compared the Patriot Act to Mein Kampf.  "The Patriot Act is the first step. 'Mein Kampf' - 'Mein Kampf' was written long before Hitler came to power."

We created this web video to show the depths to which these Kerry supporters will sink to win in November.

Is this the Democratic Party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt who reassured his countrymen we have nothing to fear but fear itself?

No.  This is John Kerry's Coalition of the Wild-eyed, who have nothing to offer but fear-mongering.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Campaign Manager

9. It goes along with their MO....
Everyone decrying this regime as facist has every right to declare it and shout it from the rooftops! So, they in turn take what is being decried as foul and try to use it to their advantage.

Nothing new here except it doesn't fit the bill. It's empty words being flung like piles of doo trying to get something to stick when in essence it's the facists/bullies who actually fit the bill.

If you can't pull yourself away from the nasty PR then push it back onto the other person in hopes that people won't see the truth of the matter and just get caught up in the nastiness of it all!!! Sounds like a soap opera to me!

Go ahead...let them! They are definitely opening the door to unlock a dejavu connection to the past! Good luck making any of it stick! If they can do it then we can show the truth of how it corresponds to that era! BRING IT ON!

We created this web video to show the depths to which these Kerry supporters will sink to win in November.

They created a video comparing Gore and Moore and Dean to Hitler, and this is supposed to show how low *Kerry* supporters will sink? Does this make any sense to anyone?

And the reason why these guys are like Hitler is because they're "pessimistic" and "rage filled"? WTF? I don't believe I've ever heard anyone express the idea: "It's bad enough Hitler killed all those people, but his pessimism made it so much worse!"

28. Every time that ad plays to a GOP voter he or she is going to have to...
...think about what each of those individuals has said in regards to the way our country is currently being run. And that, IMHO, will raise far more questions among people that are already beginning to wonder what's going on with their party's leadership.

Additionally, if they're the least bit curious about ad that was originally shown by MoveOn.org, they might be tempted to actually find it and watch it. MoveOn.org couldn't have paid enough money to buy that kind of advertising.

When you add the GOP campaign document referenced above, there ia an air of MAJOR desperation about their attempts to smear Kerry, Moore, Gore and other Democrats. IMHO, that's not a very good way to prop up their struggling campaign.

15. If the clips were taken from MoveOn's contest entries,
did the boosh campaign get permission from the creators of the videos? I understand they don't need permission for archival footage of Hitler, but if there is anything in those clips that is uniquely the creation of those who entered the contest, the booshies could be in violation of copyright law.

I'd love for someone to sue them.

no where and I think they actually got a little positive traction from being able to complain about the Bush/Hitler comparisons. So they decide to use the same tactic against Kerry? This reminds me of a fighter who knows they are going down but keeps flailing away in any direction looking to make some sort of contact.

21. They have lost their minds!
But I love it!
When I first went to the website and saw the ad I thought , "Oh, this is a B*sh mocking site!" Then I realized it was the real thing and I was confused as hell.
I love this ad because it displays Al Gore during his "How Dare They" speech (the best lines, too!)and John Kerry speaking out against taxes very effectively. Comments form MM, Gephardt, and Dean wer against B*sh! The overlay then of Hitler was a confusing part that I thought was a reference to B*sh!
And they even left Moveon.org's website address in the video!
So they are advertising for Moveon.org! BIZARRE!
Then the bit about "God told me to smite the Iraqis..." was just delicious , although they should edit that part so it is easier to read!
EXTREMELY confusing to have had the Smirk at the end!
That's when I thought,"Whose website am I at???"
Imploding? YES!!!
Insane? YES!!!!

I started to wonder: how badly divided is the country really? Maybe this ad really would reinforce many people's beliefs that they should vote for Bush? I mean, I don't see how -- but maybe America is so badly divided that I can't even understand how a large chunk of the population thinks. :(

24. Remember the Republicans say using Hitler is most "Vile"
Here is what the Republicans had to say about adds from to PRIVATE citizens that had compared bush to Hitler.

But two of more than 1,500 submissions have outraged Republicans and leading Jewish groups for comparing Mr. Bush, in profile and policy, to Hitler.

"This is the worst and most vile form of political hate speech," Ed Gillespie, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in one of several statements he issued. He urged the nine Democrats running for president to repudiate the advertisements.

41. Thought of that, as well...
either they can't use that line again... or if/when they do (and they will...) they are begging for some comparisons which demonstrate that they out flip-flop the democrats at a ratio of about 3:1.

26. Kerry should run the whole video
in his campaign ads with no comments.

Turn it back on them.

32. I finally saw that ad last night.
It was just bizarre. You've got democrats yelling then you see a picture of Hitler talking about Al Queda then you've got the democrats yelling again then you got Bush with happy-music. Its just bizarre.

43. THIS AD IS GREAT - CAN A DUer SAVE IT AND POST IT?
...before the freeps and Bush/Cheney catch on and delete it....I was trying to save it and couldn't....

Please someone save the file and post it somehow if you can...this ad will go down in history as the all-time biggest f*ck-up of the administration....

This way other DUers can see it after it "disappears" like an enemy combatant...

45. you know what they say about the first side
to bring up Hitler? That's right, they lose. Earlier this week, Clinton is like Hitler and now Kerry is lke Hitler. I can not see even the most remote similarities between Hitler and either of those two. Does anyone else see anything AT ALL? Of course if you want to compare their man and Hitler I think you can on a few levels without much of a stretch.

He might be risking the splintering of his clueless wannabe-fascist base by inadvertently encouraging them to vote for Kerry.

49. The thing that pisses me off..
Bush campaign now has a note on the wesbite/ad saying that the Hitler piece was from "a Kerry SUPPORTER" ad. The MoveON contest had NOTHING to do with a particluar candidate.. that entry came in before any nominee was presumed... And.. it was taken off MoveOn's site and disavowed. Bush's people just can't stop lying, can they? It wasn't a "group of Kerry supporters" that used the Hitler image.. :grr:

50. that's right -- I saw the contest entries when they were on Moveon
and that was like Nov/Dec of last year, way, way,way before Kerry was even nominated.

51. Here is a picture of the first American "coalition of the wild eyed"
many republicans of today apparently support totalitarianism and would have supported monarchy and sought refuge in Canada at the time this first American "coalition of the wild eyed" was successful in establishing democracy.

These guys gave some pretty fiery speeches and wrote some pretty radical stuff. Things like Patrick Henry saying "Give me liberty, or give me death." Or Jefferson writing about a government of, by, and for the people".

Now we have to rid ourselves of another "King George" that despises democracy. So it's really no surprise that Rove and his cronies would refer to those that want to preserve democracy as a "coalition of the wild eyed".

he knows he cannot win.

The strategy is to let Kerry win in November and take back the house and senate in '06.

We ***MUST*** take back congress or it will be a repeat of monica 24/7 in '07.

59. Actually I like the idea
of using it back on them. I suggested this to the DNC, in fact, when they asked me to sign their petition asking the Bush campaign to remove this from their website. I also told Bush to watch out or we'd make sure EVERYONE knows about grandpa Prescott and his arms trading to the Nazis!!!
