Angry White House pulls RTE (Ireland) interview
THE White House has lodged a complaint with the Irish Embassy in Washington over RTE journalist Carole Coleman's interview with US President George Bush.

And it is believed the President's staff have now withdrawn from an exclusive interview which was to have been given to RTE this morning by First Lady Laura Bush.

It is understood that both RTE and the Department of Foreign Affairs were aware of the exclusive arrangement, scheduled for 11am today. However, when RTE put Ms Coleman's name forward as interviewer, they were told Mrs Bush would no longer be available.

The Irish Independent learned last night that the White House told Ms Coleman that she interrupted the president unnecessarily and was disrespectful. She also received a call from the White House in which she was admonished for her tone.

little more..

37. Yeah How DARE You Interrupt Our King!
The Holy Presidency

Bush: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
Democrats: Order, eh? Who does he think he is?
Bush: I am your president!
Democrats: Well, I didn't vote for you.
Bush: You don't vote for presidents.
Democrats: Well, how did you become president, then?
Bush: The blacked robed supreme justices appoint you. That is why I am your president!
Democrats: Listen. Strange unelected individuals living in ivory towers distributing power to one egotistical maniac is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical judicial appointment by people who run around in black robes who are themselves appointed by people in power.

ARTHUR: Well, I AM king...
DENNIS: Oh king, eh, very nice. An' how'd you get that, eh? By
exploitin' the workers -- by 'angin' on to our outdated imperialist
dogma which perpetuates the economic an' social differences in our
society! If there's ever going to be any progress--
WOMAN: Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here. Oh -- how
d'you do?
ARTHUR: How do you do, good lady. I am Arthur, King of the
Britons. Who's castle is that?
WOMAN: King of the who?
ARTHUR: The Britons.
WOMAN: Who are the Britons?
ARTHUR: Well, we all are. we're all Britons and I am your king.
WOMAN: I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an
autonomous collective.
DENNIS: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship.
A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--
WOMAN: Oh there you go, bringing class into it again.
DENNIS: That's what it's all about if only people would--
ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives
in that castle?
WOMAN: No one live there.
ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We
take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the
week.
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified
at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal
affairs,--
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the
purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of
the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to
carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing
swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive
power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some
farcical aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just
because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd
put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up!

DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!
ARTHUR: Bloody peasant!
DENNIS: Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you here
that, eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing
me, you saw it didn't you?

Whew...I'm cryin I'm laughing so fucking hard!!!

Thanks!

when she found herself face to face with a tyrant.

If the WH is worried about people who are rude and interrupt unnecessarily maybe they better start teaching W some manners. Good manners start at home.

And while they're at, in the words of Dick Cheney, go f**k yourself.

10. In the interview, Bush asks a question.
When Ms. Coleman starts to respond, Bush interrupts and says, "Let me finish."

I was like "Huh?"

Personally, I thought Bush was arrogant. He assumed this "interview" would not be an interview, but a chance for him to put his propaganda before the public.

8. "disrespectful" = asked smart, hard questions
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 10:54 AM by EdGy
This is a perfect example of how Bush tries to control the US press.

If they ask hard questions, if they do their jobs as journalists, they are threatened with getting all access cut off.

So they don't ask these questions, they don't push him when he spews his bullshit.

The interview was excellent, the interviewer was excellent.

She could tell he was not answering her questions, or answering them wiht lies, and bullshit, and she tried to call him on it, but he kept using up the little time they had by not answering her questions and acting all huffy.

Compare how he behaved to Clinton's interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now election day 2000. She was asking hard questions, and pushing him, but he answered her, he took her to task a bit, but showed himself to be smart, on top of the issues, and was able to actually answer tough questions.

Bush is incompetent, this interview was proof of it. No wonder they're punishing Irish TV.

If they had just kept quiet, Bush's horrible performance during that interview might have passed relatively unnoticed. But since they insist on being assholes, now EVERYONE is going to be watching the interview to see what the reporter said that was so bad.

The world is going to see that the person who comes off as an interrupting, rude jerk with a condescending tone is none other than George W. Bush.

The Frat Boy presfers scripted "reporters" throwing him softballs to a jouranlist asking him hard questions.

Since he made a fool of himself in front of the friendly Tim Russert, you can imagine what a real journalist would do to him.

But why just imagine? If you have Real Player, have a look here.

(If that doesn't work, go to this threead and try there from the root post.)

During his interview w/Dan Rather, Rather confronted him w/his comments about "being out of the loop" or "not present" when the arms for hostages crime was being committed during the Iran-Contra crimes, and king george I danced all around the question and wouldn't answer the question. Rather confronted him w/this, saying please answer the question. bush petutantly responded that he DID answer the question, Rather insisted, and bush I was clearly angry - never did answer the question. Rather was crucified and villified for "disrespecting the President" at the time.

I will never forget this. The first time I thought this group/family was really criminal.

It's like what Jon Stewart said to the caller who asked why anyone would be interviewed by the comedians who do his show. They wanna be on TV. Gads, reporters are that insecure? They will act the fools and be treated like excrement just so they get a minute of face time?

Guys, take a cue from Helen Thomas (long may she live and annoy) get some backbone! They need you, not the other way around! They never say anything true, so why bother to cover their same old same old?

He was irritable, rude, and arrogant, bragging about how wonderful America is, and how wonderful he is at saving the world. He was horribly rude to her. And that they they called HER to complain is just unbelievable. This really supports the charge that he is losing it. He basically had a hissy fit over nothing and projected all the aggression onto her, when he was the aggressive one.

35. So, let me see, there will be no interview with Laura?
Wow! Now that's a huge loss (sarcasm intended). I remember one of her interviews: "He's fun. He's funny. He's a fun guy." How intellectual.

And here's what she said after the interview (at the end of the clip)

Note: the White House had her questions for three days before the interview and she shook hands with him after the interview--then he had his private snit, apparently

75. I would LOVE to see Bush and Kerry go one-on-one in a debate
Why don't we have a debate without the stupid moderators and just let the two candidates go back and forth???

Bush was really rattled by the comment that his actions have made the world more unstable. That was a direct hit!!!!!!

43. Good
We won't have to listen to the Stepford wife. Mother of all gods, this fucking shit from the white house has got to stop. Don't they realize what true fuckers they're showing themselves to be? I would just plaster anything and everything (as long as it's true!) about them, regardless of what the fucking white house wants. Show the rest of the world at least, even if the idiots in the States don't want to know, what a bunch of whining little pissants this group is.

Oh, oh! Can you believe this?

From the article:
And it emerged last night that presidential staff suggested to Ms Coleman as she went into the interview that she ask him a question on the outfit that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern wore to the G8 summit.
Here's Taoiseach Bertie Ahern with Bill Clinton.

On another trip, Hillary Clinton toured Trinity College:

Why is it, do you believe, Clinton didn't get into a feud with any reporters, and end up squashing interviews, and make an ass of himself when he was in Ireland?

49. I saw the repeat of the interview last night on C-Span.
It was an appalling combination of ignorance and snottiness.

Since the interview was only about 10 minutes long, I'm sure Ms. Coleman wanted to get in as many questions as time would allow. But the Jerk-In-Chief had his own plan Ñ which was to blather on and on with his talking points and not allow her to ask more than a question or two.

The worst part was at the end when after he had told her to stop interrupting for the umpteenth time and she started to ask a follow up Ñ he squinted his eyes closed, dropped his head and put on a disgusted face.

What a loathsome excuse for a human being.

60. I just watched the clip and I agree
Ms. Coleman was extremely tolerant of W's rambling. You can't blame her for trying to move the interview along. W was clearly coached to put on that "please let me finish" act, in an effort to limit the number of incisive questions she could ask.

Did anyone notice that HE interrupted HER at least twice?

Aw, poor baby! What's the matter can't handle a REAL reporter? A little different than the US puppy dog press, isn't it? REAL, HARD, questions instead of a fawning Tim Russert simpering, "Yes, Mr. President! No, Mr. President! Tongue-massage your prostate, Mr. President?

to suppress this brave Irish reporter? Will they even bother to report this story about Bush lodging a protest with the Irish government about Carole Coleman? Will our press have the courage to report how this one woman had more courage than all of them have combined?

like that--attempts to intimidate me. The local prosecutor actually paid me a before hours visit several years ago when I was pressing him to charge a man who killed his girlfriend.

My typical response? Go f*ck yourself, of course...long before Cheney made the phrase "cool."
