Coors, brewery part company on gay rights
Activists appreciate corporation's efforts, but can't back Pete

By Peggy Lowe, Rocky Mountain News
June 26, 2004

Gary Williams and Julian Moran walked into Charlie's, got in line at the bar and ordered a pitcher of Coors.

In a scene replicated dozens of times each day at this gay country-western bar on Colfax, Williams and Moran marched headlong into a controversy that has long ailed the ale company. Coors Brewing Co. is a gay-friendly corporation headed by an anti-gay rights political candidate named Pete Coors.

"He wants the money from the gay community but he doesn't actually want to support the gay community in the rights we need for everyday life."

The annual gay and lesbian parade and rally is set for Denver's Capitol Hill on Sunday and Coors Brewing Co. will give thousands of dollars to benefit The Center, a group working for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

O, the irony...

1. Hypocrisy--one of my long-standing complaints.
This is similar to Mormons. They'll take money from non-Mormons, but they successfully discourage members from buying most anything from non-Mormons.

It seems rather discriminatory and unfair. The essence is that they want the benefits of the greater community, but not the responsibilities of a fair and two-way economic relationship with that same greater community they are a sub-group of.

2. Man, the whole Coors thing makes my head hurt
Coors has been boycotted to various degrees by the gay community for over a decade. But in the last few years the company's position on gay rights has been outstanding. They offered domestic partner benefits to their employees, taken pro-gay stands on various issues, and donated, generously, to many gay charities. One feels like rewarding a company like this by buying their product.

But a sizeable chunk of that money ends up with the Coors family, who are arch-conservative and hateful. You reward the company, you also reward the family. Plus there's that whole gay-community alcohol angle some people have a problem with (not me though).

It's a good thing I don't drink. I wouldn't know what to do!

4. Eventually the money goes to the haters
I don't drink either, but if I did, it sure wouldn't be Coors and their phoney "tolerance."

5. You both have a point
About it being pisswater and all (Anchor Steam was my beer of choice way back when). But if a gay bar served Coors I wouldn't have any cows or anything like that.

I believe the Coors Company to be sincere in their "tolerance."

6. Anyway, I hate their "Twins" commercials
So fucking dumb! That's almost as offensive as their anti-gay owner.
