CBS: 'Back-Door Draft' Raises Questions (Gaffney-draft might be needed)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/28/sunday/main620263.shtml

<snip>

"The U.S. military is operating at about as high a tempo as it can," says defense analyst Frank Gaffney, who was a Pentagon arms expert in the Reagan administration. "In short, you may need to move rather more directly and swiftly towards a draft than most of us are prepared to contemplate right now."

He says a draft may be the only way the U.S. can tackle the war on terror.

Explains Gaffney, "The sheer magnitude of that problem on literally a global scale, I think, will overwhelm the current capacities of our military. Indeed, they're, by many accounts, pretty much at the breaking point as things stand right now."

<snip>

Michael O'Hanlon, who analyzes military readiness for the Brookings Institution, says, political rhetoric or not, candidate Kerry is on to something.

"We are essentially imposing a mini-draft, or a draft by any other name, on people in the military who had no reason to think they would have to stay in many cases and are being told they must stay," O'Hanlon explains.

8. I hear this time there will be no college deferments
And an agreement worked out with Canada that will send those back who try to hide out there.

H'mmm for those of you of draft age wonder what other countries you can escape to?

Isn't it nice that now the neocon Gaffney is saying a draft might be needed. Wish there was some way to draft the Rethugs, Neocons and Freeper's and their kids first.

13. There's always Mexico ...

But I bet they would just pay the police to hunt down draft dodgers and return them.

3. Have you ever noticed...
first, someone speculates that a new policy might happen. It's dismissed with laughter.

Then, an official says that the new policy could never happen. It's a bad idea.

Then, the policy is being considered, maybe, but just as a contingency.

Then, surprise, surprise, it happens.

I suspect a draft will be here very soon.

16. Yep.
The hated, no-way-can-be-reselected, poser, loser, evil sob, sitting in the WH just might go ahead and start one. Then it will be in the lap of the new president, who can always blame it on *bushco.

5. I'm too old, but if they
could find a way, I'm sure they'd send me. But don't count on Jenna and Barbara answering the call; they'll probably be too busy defending Crawford, TX from al-Quaida, the way dear ol' Dad defended Texas and Alabama from the Viet Cong!

18. No, that's not how it works in Republican America
Republicans will not serve. They are better than everybody else. Only crazy poor people will serve the wishes of the ruling elite.

Don't believe me? Ask Bush people about W "choosing to serve" in
TANG.

17. there would be revolt
hundreds of thousands would simply refuse. What will they do? Imprison all of them? Execute them? Fine them? Nearly 60% now say the war was a mistake, do they really believe the public will allow a draft for a mistake?

21. maybe they won't call it a draft
maybe they will just offer a lot of 'incentives' to join the armed forces... while at the same time the economy goes down the toilet and unemployment skyrockets into double digits... between being homeless, going to prison, and going to iraq, a lot of people will choose the latter...

19. Can I be drafted still?
I have a legal hearing loss, high and low frequency losses in my right ear, and I'm wondering if I can still be drafted?

29. Depends
If it's considered a legal hearing loss, you won't be able to pass the physical, and they do check your hearing range.

But I would check with a recruiter, just to be sure.

22. How about...
moving "more directly and swiftly towards" developing a comprehensive strategy that involves a true worldwide non-corporate coalition whose main focus would not be on natural resources and profit.

Nah, nevermind.

23. One question
How are they going to use this draft to fuck over the blue states?
Surely they will try to achieve that goal with this operation too.

There is not enough time to send them to get killed overseas either.

27. I was thinking in terms of strategies like wedge issues..
But yes, they will make instant Democrats out of a significant number of Draftees.

It is the cowardice of those who support the PNAC agenda without offering up their child to the slaughter that ultimately dooms them. Because if you believe that Buffy and Muffy are going to war, I think I may finally sell that bridge.

31. Please. I need a decent Canadian man to marry me so I can save my only,..
,...son from this nightmare.

:bounce:

He's merely 14 years old and had no say so in such a destiny.

He is all I have,...my only real family.

Won't some kind and honorable man, with integrity, step forward?

I can offer a highly educated mind, a big shoulder, homemaking skills, "appearance" that competes against any,...and a mouth that can challenge every *sigh* body.

Why is humanity wasting the gift to create more wonderful inventions?

What a waste of space.
