NATO Leaders Agree to Train Iraqi Forces
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040628/ap_on_re_mi_ea/nato_summit&cid=540&ncid=716

<snip>
"We have decided today to offer NATO's assistance to the government of Iraq with the training of its security forces," said a statement adopted in the opening session of the NATO summit.

A statement called on alliance officials to "urgently" discuss details of the training plan with the Iraqi authorities. NATO said it would also urgently consider "further proposals to support the nascent Iraqi security institutions."

The number of NATO instructors to be deployed and the timing of the operation were unclear, but the move will give NATO a military presence on the ground in Iraq for the first time. Sixteen nations have sent troops individually to join coalition forces in Iraq.

The initiative came as NATO leaders opened a summit Monday dominated by the situation in Iraq as the U.S.-led administration handed over power to an Iraqi government two days ahead of schedule in an apparent attempt to surprise insurgents.

1. So the Bushistas won't be teaching them their interrogation tactics!

Iraqis might be somewhat relieved by this!

6. How relieved would you be to know the Germans are now teaching.
I hear in the 30's and 40's they did a lot of "study" in this area.

7. I don't blame folks for the crimes of their grandparents ...

... although Germany sixty years ago was horrid. But if there's something more current that I should know about, I'd certainly welcome the information.

3. It must have lost something in the translation. What our NATO
allies meant to say is that they would give us no money and no troops.

4. Sovereignty my arse!
Do you know, I read that whole article and I did not see ONE quote or even a MENTION of the "Iraqi Government" REQUESTING NATO assistance!

Yet the article talks like its a done deal! Who requested NATO help? The "Iraqi Government" or the Bush cabal?

5. This article is quite misleading. Propaganda for US consumption.
Germany's Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, said he opposes training in Iraq, though Germany would, if requested, help school Iraqi military forces in Germany. He added: "There will be no German troops in Iraq." France, which has battled to soften the summit declaration, says it understands that training will be outside Iraq.

France opposes US Iraq plan

French officials said ... there would "no NATO flag" in Iraq.
