CNN - Saudis: (Saudi wost wanted) Al Qaeda member surrenders
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/06/28/saudi.omari/index.html

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- One of Saudi Arabia's most wanted militants has turned himself into the authorities, the first senior suspect to surrender under a one-month government amnesty announced last week.

Othman Al-Omari, number 21 on Saudi Arabia's most wanted list of 26, accepted King Fahd's offer of amnesty, which was made last week, according to Saudi sources Monday.

Al-Omari, who turned himself in on Sunday night, was a business partner of Shaban Al Shihri -- the first al Qaeda member to accept the offer when he turned himself in Friday.

2. Perhaps some of the Al Qaeda members are seeing the writing on the wall.
If Saudi Arabia uses the same tactics as Egypt has been using against terrorists for decades, they'll either be killed, jailed or run out of the country forever. Ever wonder why Arafat, an Egyptian, doesn't go home? If he pulled the same crap in Egypt as in Israel, he'd have decomposed long ago. Al Qaeda doesn't seem to be long for Saudi Arabia.

It's about time Saudi Arabia got serious.

4. This, Mr. Hill, Is Not The Saudis Getting Serious
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 11:51 AM by The Magistrate
Those who partake of the "amnesty" will simply continue as above-ground supporters of the Jihadis, funneling money and information to the underground fighting elements. Serious action on the part of the Saudis would comprise a purge of elements within the royal family itself, and breaking the Wahabbi clergy, neither of which, you may depend upon it, will be done.

Arafat, by the way, is a scion of the most prominent old Arab Palestinian family, the al'Husseini, and a not too distant reklative of the old Grand Mufti. His career as an agitator and militant began in an organization sponsored by Egypt.

9. The House of Saud and the Wahabbi have always been
a mutual admiration society. Each derives its legitimacy from the other. I agree it's going to take some serious reform to make a difference in Saudi Arabia. Al Qaeda is a start.

Arafat is related to the al'Husseini through his mother. Before his current career he earned a degree in civil engineering from Cairo University and served in the Egyptian army as an officer during the Suez campaign in 1956.

11. don't be fooled...
I don't believe the Saudies are serious for a minute. All that was just a show to appease the U.S.

12. That's why we need to chaperone Iraq toward the light.
It will cause both Saudi Arabia and Iran heartburn and maybe influence future reform.

5. I thought the amnesty dictated that you had not killed anybody.
Has that been dropped?
