Gov. Bush meets with Haitian-Americans to discuss rebuilding Haiti

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush met with 20 members of South Florida's Haitian-American community Monday to discuss the formation of a new commission that will work on rebuilding the Caribbean country.

The meeting included both Republicans and Democrats, as well as some who are supporters of former Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide's Lavalas Family Party and some who are not.

The meeting at the University of Miami was a follow-up to Bush's visit to Haiti earlier this month, and a request by that country's interim prime minister, Gerard Latortue, for the governor to help.

''As Haiti continues to work to rebuild its nation, Florida is committed to supporting the Haitian people and their goals to ensure a positive future for them and their children,'' Bush said in a statement.
