Chirac Attacks Bush's Support for Turkish EU Bid
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac told President Bush (news - web sites) to mind his own business Monday after Bush called on the European Union (news - web sites) to fix a date for Turkey to start EU entry talks.

The strongly worded attack came at a NATO (news - web sites) summit in Istanbul that was intended to bury discord within the alliance over the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites), which France vehemently opposed.

"If President Bush really said that the way I read it, well, not only did he go too far but he went into a domain which is not his own," Chirac told reporters at the summit.

"It is like me trying to tell the United States how it should manage its relations with Mexico," he added.

1. I'll bet Chirac is just
loving this too. Slapping Georgie after what he received probably feels absolutely great.

10. Maybe not. France may be supporting Turkey's admission to EU ...

and Chirac may be worried about political consequences of * making comments that might suggest France is acting under US pressure.

If/when Turkey gains admission, watch George "Who's the Big Cheese? I am!" Bush try to take credit, despite US not being a member of EU.

2. The Chimp has certainly 'repaired' relations with Europe-
If I remember correctly, these assurances were made to Turkey by * a year or two ago for alliance against Iraq.I imagine that Chimpy was fulfilling on his promise. Turkey has been paid.

6. Turks incensed by Bush visit
Mass demonstrations against US policies in Iraq and the NATO summit in Istanbul greet President George Bush's first visit to Turkey.

Speaking to Turkish television on Friday, ahead of his arrival for talks with the country's leaders and for next week's NATO summit, Bush said he was impatient to touch down in Turkey.

"I am really looking forward to it," he said. "I have never been to Turkey before. All my friends who have been there say it is a fantastic country. I do know that your people are very warm and friendly."

9. NATO splits remain despite summit
A summit designed to underscore restored NATO unity may not have succeeded in patching up old differences.

12. Angry Chirac puts Bush in his place
French president Jacques Chirac bluntly told United States president George Bush to mind his own business on Monday when the United States president urged European leaders to give Turkey a firm date for starting EU membership talks later this year.

Ignoring the determined effort to celebrate improved transatlantic relations after the Iraq crisis, the French president publicly rebuked Bush at Nato's Istanbul summit for calling for special treatment for the Turks.

Bush, he complained, "not only went too far but went on to territory which is not his own".

He added: "It's as if I was advising the US on how they should manage their relations with Mexico."
