U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq - 853 U.S. service members have died

As of Tuesday, June 29, 853 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites) last year, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 632 died as a result of hostile action and 221 died of non-hostile causes.

2. Isn't that total just those
who've "died instantly" and those who were admitted to the hospital and died later, were not included in the total?

3. Yes, but that is the way the military always counted their KIA
The military has always underreported their deaths in this way. Somewhere they have a list of people who have "left the theater of action" and in that list are the people who left in body bags but not KIA.
