Camp Shelby can handle 3,500 155th troops, Guard says
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Mississippi National Guard says its Camp Shelby training center will be able to accommodate the 3,500 soldiers of the 155th Separate Armored Brigade scheduled to arrive in mid- to late-August.
The addition of the Mississippi National Guard brigade will bring to about 7,500 the number of troops training at Camp Shelby at the same time.
Not since World War II, when 100,000 soldiers were stationed at the sprawling Hattiesburg-area facility, has Camp Shelby had so many troops.
About 4,000 troops from the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment from Tennessee began training at Camp Shelby this month. They will be in the final stages of their training before the Mississippi troops mobilize.
"We'll have finished most of the administrative stuff and the small unit training before the 155th arrives," said Col. Stan Stricklen, Camp Shelby Training Site commander. "There won't be 7,000 people stacked on top of each other."
The camp could house up to 9,000 soldiers at once
