NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- First lady Laura Bush christened a $2.2 billion nuclear-powered attack submarine named after her home state of Texas on Saturday, cracking a bottle of American sparkling wine against the hull on her first try.

"May all who board her be forever blessed and may all who encounter her upon the seas remember, 'Don't mess with Texas,"' she said at the ceremony at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard.

With President Bush hitting the campaign trail this weekend in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Laura Bush said he gave her important advice before the big day: "Laura, whatever you do, don't miss."

"I promised George I would put those years of watching the Texas Rangers to good use today," she said.

6. Noticed it Said 'Sparkling Wine' - not Champagne
God forbid they should use a bottle of Frog Water to christen a murrican combatant vessel.

10. Actually, the wine bottle was broken on a special rig
that was attached to the hull. It appears to include some kind of knife attachment to ensure a clean break. I wonder what all that shit cost the tax payer.

18. What's with all the fancy ships?

Nancy R. cracked a bottle last month and now Laura.

As much as I understand that we have to be ready to defend Amerka, these ships are leaving a Lot of Children Behind. They cost Billions.

If we are preparing to fight the terrorists on the homeland why do we need ships?

Or, are we preparing to invade Iran etc., etc.,

19. I christen thee..."Bullship!"
Perhaps, like her husband, it'll never see any military action but instead will hide in out-of-the-way harbors, failing its seaworthiness test....

Northrup Grumman

The defense contractor posted double-digit gains in sales and net income, largely due to increased sales of IT services to the government.

Stronger sales of IT services to the government helped defense contractor Northrop Grumman post double-digit gains in sales and net income during the second quarter, the company said Thursday.
Northrop Grumman's IT unit increased sales 9% year-over-year to $1.22 billion during the three months ended June 30, according to the company. Government IT sales increased 13% on the strength of several major contracts, including a $337 million deal to build a secure data network for the Department of Homeland Security and a $25 million deal to create a document-management system for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Overall, Northrop Grumman said second-quarter sales increased 11% to $7 billion while net income increased 44% to $295 million. Earnings per share increased 44% to 79 cents.

21. She seems to have grown a bit around "amidships"
I don't normally like to comment on the appearance of politician's spouses, but the dress doesn't exactly flatter her in that picture. It goes well with the champagne flying around, though.
