Armstrong's Bracelet Worn by Bush, Kerry

<snip>
AUSTIN, Texas - John Kerry (news - web sites) wears one. President Bush (news - web sites) has one, too. So do several celebrities. It's the "Live Strong" yellow wristband produced by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the cycling superstar's cancer-fighting organization.

Since the fund-raising effort began in May, the charity has sold 7 million of the rubber wristbands for $1 each, with plans for 1.8 million more. Nike donated the first $1 million, and proceeds go toward programs for young people with cancer.

<snip>
"It's been an overwhelming experience," foundation President Mitch Stoller said Friday. "I think everybody, from average Americans to celebrities, are getting the message of courage and hope."

Foundation spokeswoman Michelle Milford said celebrities who have been sighted wearing the bands include Bono, Alec Baldwin (news), Bruce Willis, Robin Williams, Matt Damon (news) and Ben Stiller.

1. I had noticed the yellow wristband but didn't know what it signified.
Now I know, I guess.

2. A great fundraiser, indeed.
But it annoys the crap out of me to see politicos and celebs doing anything they can to get themselves in the news for a second more. And this rings of that type of thing.

But then, I am easily annoyed.

12. Yeah, it's so disgusting to see people advocate for a worthy cause
I mean, why bother people who wouldn't have heard of the Foundation otherwise?

13. I think you know my point.
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 05:14 PM by HuckleB
It's about creating star power for the majority of these people. If it wasn't, you would surely see celebrities wearing, for example, Tyler Hamilton Foundation pins, no? After all, I'm sure some of them are more likely to be attracted to the focus of MS than cancer. But Tyler doesn't have the star power Lance does, does he? Thus, we've got to wear the bracelets if we're going to create chatter.

By the way, I bought 25 of the bracelets and gave them away, so I'm not pooing the cause in any way.

24. No, I don't get your point at all
would you criticize all the performers and personalities that donate their time and talent to Jerry Lewis' national cerebral palsy telethon rather than appear on the local TV station's benefit for the old firehouse. How selfish that they want to be near Jerry's white-hot star power!

25. meh
in the long run the foundation still gets that dollar alec baldwin paid -- that's all that really matters

it's like having a canned food drive with an incentive like "person who brings in the most gets pizza" -- regardless of a person's motivation, hungry people still get fed

27. Yes, I agree.
And anyone who reads my first post, which was actually quite light-hearted and self-denigrating, would see that I understood this. Uh, well, anyone except for the poster who's chewing my butt off.

<White House spokesman Taylor Gross said Bush also has a wristband and supports the Armstrong foundation.>

4. You have to be able to ride 30 miles without hurting yourself...
Before you're allowed to wear it.
Bush hasn't qualified yet. not expected to, either.

Hey, Chimpy, 14.5 miles in 1:02. The Bar has been RAISED, asshole!

22. I think you may have misunderstood.
When BiggJawn posted his first post -- post number 4 -- it came up twice, as posts 4 and 5. He then edited 5 to indicate that it was a dupe.

He was not referring to your thread, which I don't think is a dupe.

Salud!

10. post office advertising bracelets
Kerry has been wearing his for awhile. Bush must have decided he wanted to be like the big boys. I didn't know what it was until standing in a long line at the Post Office a few months back. Since they sponser Lance, all of the ads for the bracelet is all over the place. Boredom, while standing in line allows you to read everything posted on the walls.

15. I bought 50 of them!
That's the only way I could order them online. Forty adult size and ten child size for $50. I hope they get here by Wednesday -- it's the last day of the summer session and I'd like to give them to my students.

19. The article title is a lie to try to make Kerry and Bush look equal
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 06:06 PM by Democat
Kerry is a cancer survivor who wears the bracelet proudly - Bush's campaign just claimed he owns one when they were asked about it for an article.

The right wing media in America will stoop to any depth to make sure they don't say anything positive about Kerry that might make him look better than Bush.

28. It's not like the reporter talked to Kerry about this bracelet and
why he was wearing it or what it meant to him. The picture is even at an odd angle.

It was an attempt, as someone said earlier, to put * in the favorable limelight alongside Kerry and others who bought the bracelet.

If truth be known, someone else could have bought the bracelet for him, too.
