A nation in danger. Or a President in peril?
"America was bracing itself last night after intelligence agencies warned al-Qa'ida could be planning to attack financial institutions on the East Coast and that its operatives had already carried out surveillance missions on the targets...

"We are a nation in danger," said President George Bush, after the nation's state of alert was raised to "orange" (high) on Sunday evening. "We are doing everything in our power to confront the danger. a solemn reminder of the threat we continue to face"...

Howard Dean highlighted the concerns of many without access to the information..."I am concerned that every time something happens that's not good for President Bush, he plays this trump card, which is terrorism," he told CNN. "His whole campaign is based on the notion that 'I can keep you safe, therefore, at times of difficulty for America, stick with me' and then out comes Tom Ridge. It's just impossible to know how much of this is real and how much of this is politics, and I suspect there's some of both in it."

1. History repeating itself...

A note to the American media (and thank God for genuine journalists around the world who are still willing to report the truth!):

"Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? . . . it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship… All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

— Hermann Goering (Hitler’s deputy, convicted of war crimes at Nuremberg)

2. I'll take "pResident in Peril" for 600, Alex.

Now it comes out that this "latest" intelligence may well have pre-dated 911.

Numbers go down, Lert Level goes up. There is a cancer on the Presidency.

3. Should have mentioned - this is the FRONT PAGE headline....
Pretty good to see it, although I'm surprised they don't actually explore the story in more depth...

5. I would love to see it as a NYT front page headline....
I will have to settle for the foreign press being way ahead and on top of the real story, as usual. Thanks for posting it!

10. Yea, but its out in most of the big US papers today.
That has got to look bad. Remember the last alert. No new info, no specific info, no change in alert status. Everyone went "huh?"

11. wow! even made cnn and msrnc this morning....
I caught a little of both reports. Of course homeland security is rationalizing using the old info by saying there is a new threat... The coming election!

4. How much longer will W & Co
continue to get away with these crimes?

Issuing terror alerts for political gain is a blatant abuse of power.

Terrorizing people, just to get your opponent off the front page is a high crime.

Add this to all the other lies and acts of treason, that this bunch commits on a daily basis and it's way past the time for these bastards to resign.

13. For crying out loud
they shut down the friggin Holland Tunnel.

You want to try to figure how much that cost NY & NJ?

Not to mention scaring the crap out of half of NY again?

If a blow job is an abuse of power, what is calling a phoney terror alert for political gain?

9. Uh, pResident in Peril.....
Their tactics are so transparent. The specific information is YEARS old. ABC mentioned that on the news last night, however is was only in passing and you really had to be listening.
Their "terra warnings" are solely on the whim of polls and porentially bad press. It would be awesome if research could correlate terra warnings with real news and see if there is a link. Methinks there is.

17. has anyone noticed that
someone supposedly checks out a building and we spend millions shutting down the Holland Tunnel? Who won that round?

Sheesh, according to the official line all they have to do is send an e-mail and we run around in very expensive circles. A $20 communcation can make us spend millions on a one time only defense?

Obviously, we're self-flagellating the war on terror. Feel safe yet?
