New N. Korean (nuke?) Missiles Said to Threaten U.S.(West coast)
By REUTERS

Filed at 11:42 a.m. ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - North Korea is deploying new land- and sea-based ballistic missiles (the R-27) that can carry nuclear warheads and may have sufficient range to hit the United States, according to the authoritative Jane's Defense Weekly.<snip>

It said communist North Korea had acquired the know-how during the 1990s from Russian missile specialists and by buying 12 former Soviet submarines which had been sold for scrap metal but retained key elements of their missile launch systems.

Jane's, which did not specify its sources, said the sea-based missile was potentially the more threatening of the two new weapons systems.

``It would fundamentally alter the missile threat posed by the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and could finally provide its leadership with something that it has long sought to obtain -- the ability to directly threaten the continental U.S.,'' the weekly said.

Apart from targeting the United States, South Korea or Japan, cash-strapped North Korea might seek to sell the technology to countries that have bought its missiles in the past, with Iran a prime candidate, the article added.<snip>

4. Jane's has much more cred than the CIA & aWol & F.U. Cheney
N. Korea has threatened Japan by launching a missile over it--I have little doubt they'd LOVE to be able to buzz one over Los Angeles.

The Dear Leader was a scary kook when Clinton was in office. He hasn't changed.

8. I agree that it was completely a fiasco against an arsenal like that
that belonging to the US or USSR/Russia.

But, knocking down one or two missiles is something that is probably more technically feasible.

That said, the Korea problem needs to be resolved anyway. Withdrawing troops from the region and letting the two Koreas settle things like sovereign states (what a shocking concept) would be a good start.

7. Ignore it. It might be based on current intel. We have to wait
at least three years for it to germinate before we check it and this is too real a threat to pursue prior to an election!

12. I suggest we try to vote early!
Just in case, you know. lol.

Down here in San Diego - we'd be a good target, what with all of our military bases, aircraft carriers, airports, and those nuclear power plants sitting about half an hour away as the crow flies.

Oooooh, I'm scared.

NOT.

14. Would Our Already-Mailed Absentee Ballots Still Count...
...if we were :nuke:ed before Election Day?
Assuming they could dig the ballots out of the rubble.

Is an absentee ballot that is validly cast still valid if
the voter dies before Election Day?

I am somewhat :scared::scared::scared: they'll pull a

15. Maybe so
but North Korea is dangerous. I wish it were simply a matter of South Korea sharing their material wealth with the North, but as was pointed out elsewhere on this thread, their leader is a nut job. I really feel for all the people in the North who are starving.
