Battle erupts in north Iraqi city

Clashes between Iraqi police and gunmen in the northern city of Mosul have left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured, hospital sources say.

The fighting erupted at around midday (0800 GMT) in the south-western part of the city and spread elsewhere.

"Police are shooting everywhere," said a correspondent for Reuters news agency in Mosul - Iraq's third largest city.

There has been an increase in militant attacks on Iraqi security forces since the June handover of power to Iraqis.
