Raw Sewage Floods London's River Thames
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040804/wl_nm/britain_sewage_dc

British environment authorities mounted a major cleanup operation on Wednesday after flooding forced hundreds of thousands of tons of raw sewage into the River Thames running through central London.

The Environment Agency said 600,000 tons of untreated sewage overflowed into the river as London's Victorian-era sewers were overwhelmed by torrential rains that brought chaos to parts of the city on Tuesday night.

"The overflow has to go somewhere, and the Thames is the natural place," a spokeswoman told Reuters.

The agency said the discharge had killed thousands of fish in the Thames which was declared dead due to pollution in the 1960s but is now reputedly the cleanest urban river in Europe.

7. also, the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5595098/

A huge “dead zone” of water so devoid of oxygen that sea life cannot live in it has spread across 5,800 square miles (15,000 square kilometers) of the Gulf of Mexico this summer, in what has become an annual occurrence caused by pollution.

The extensive area of uninhabitable water may be contributing indirectly to an unusual spate of shark bites along the Texas coast, experts said.
