FCC Seeks Internet Phone Wiretap Access
WASHINGTON -- Internet phone calls should be subject to the same type of law enforcement surveillance as cell and landline phones, federal regulators said Wednesday.

The Federal Communications Commission voted for proposed rules that would require Internet service providers to ensure their equipment will allow police wiretaps.

Lawyers for the Justice Department, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration asked the FCC in March to affirm that Internet calls -- or Voice Over Internet Protocol -- fall under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).

The 1994 law requires the telecommunications industry to build into its products tools that federal investigators can use to eavesdrop on conversations after getting court approval.

1. Yeah, but

It would be much easier to "scramble" an IP voice call.
I'm guessing that the next proposal is NO ENCRYPTION other
than government approved (i.e. we can easily break it) standards.
They will outlaw all other encryption techniques.

Of course, we go "go off the radar map" by doing something like
open P2P file sharing between two users, and start passing around
a lot of .jpgs which just happen to have some extra bits attached,
not that anyone would notice from looking. Extra bits are an
encrypted audio stream...

5. Is that a hidden message in your icon

or are you just happy to see me!

Seriously, I missed any discussion of this... so sorry if
it's a dupe.

BTW, years and years ago some poor shlub was fired from
his job at Lawrence Livermore for posting "porn" to newsgroups
using facility computers (this was looong before the advent of
the web)... and I always wondered if "porn" was all that he
was posting for the world to see.
