Fierce clashes in Mosul leave many dead
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/28D9BC57-661E-40EA-8CEA-E7968DB031B8.htm

<snip>
At least 14 Iraqis have been killed and 52 wounded in a roadside bomb blast and fierce clashes between Iraqi police and armed fighters in the main northern city of Mosul, according to Aljazeera's correspondent.

"The hospital received 12 bodies, including two women, and 26 injured, most of them civilians," said a doctor at Mosul's Medical City hospital, after violent clashes broke out between
the fighters and police on Wednesday.

Two of the fatalities occurred when a roadside device exploded on Baghdad Street just as a US military convoy passed by.

Aljazeera's correspondent reported that explosions were being heard in al-Najjar and al-Ghazlani neighbourhoods of Iraq's third largest city.

1. the "light fast force" strategy
Rumsfeld's pet strategy was a "light fast force" to invade Baghdad with stunning speed. Rather than defeat the Iraq armies or bother with the time and resources needed to capture and sort them, he bypassed them and let them take their weapons home.

Kinda looks like a stupid strategy now, doesn't it?

2. Kinda looks like a stupid strategy
More stupid... disbanding them... leaving them unemployed... selling off their country's infrastructure to outside interests... including Israeli, Kuwaiti, Saudi Arabian and most certainly American. This was the ultimate slap in the face... one they will give their lives to correct.... we would do EXACTLY the same. We have done the same.

"Our armies do not come into your cities and lands as conquerors or enemies, but as liberators. Your wealth has been stripped of you by unjust men ... The government of Iraq , and the future of your country, will soon belong to you. ... We will end a brutal regime ... so that Iraqis can live in security.”
General F. S. Maude, commander of the British forces, to the people of Mesopotamia , 1917
