New Swiftboat Ad...link to video!
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 09:28 AM by Windy
How is Kerry and how are we as supporters going to counter this?
They had to know it was coming. It has to be attacked or he will lose all credibility imho.

Come on DU...what do you think!!!

2. I think the ad is purposefully dishonest...
...and short on facts. But then again, what's to be expected from a bunch of Nixon CREEPS?

13. Gore ignored all the lies spread about him.
I think that Kerry has got to bury this shit in the truth, not in silence.

10. Ignoring is the worst thing - having the truth is the most important
And the first and most important truth is that none of these people actually served on the Swiftboat with John Kerry. Also, many of the people funding the "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" are from notorious right-wing neo-conservative factions.

Finally, probably not now, but later tonight I'm going to research the slander that Bush did on John McCain in the South Carolina primaries in 2000. Once again the Bush regime knew that Bush could never stand toe-to-toe with a decorated war vetern (and former POW) John McCain. So the Bush regime relied on tactics that would make Lee Altwater proud - they smeared John McCain and his war record.

But no matter what George Bush and his supporters say or do, it will never ever change the fact that George got a free pass out of Vietnam and even still he skipped part of his time serviced there.

As I told one co-worker who was a big Bush supporter and questioned Kerry's military record: "I wouldn't care if Kerry did nothing but peeled potatoes during his Vietnam service - Kerry was in Vietnam and Bush got a free pass into the National Guard and even then Bush never showed up". Of course they go back to Clinton's lack of war service and I remind them that Bill hasn't run for office since 1996.

8. It's a procession of mumbling old men...
...saying that the "served with Kerry", in much the same fashion that I "drove with J-Lo" (because I was travelling the same highway she had last week), and then more mumbling, then "unfit to serve", "can't be trusted", more mumbling. It's purposefully dishonest, meant to convey the impression that the persons featured had close and sustained contact with Kerry, and are thus reliable character witnesses. But they didn't, and are much the same assortment of people Nixon brought forth to "counter" Kerry back in the early 70s. Republican loyalists and bitter old men.

5. Do you know who those people are and who funds them? I do.
I posted extensive research about them (Repuke funded... from O'Neill's Houston law firm in Texas to <A$$KKKroft's> Missouri and Gannon) on my blog (with links):

7. One man out of a dozen who served with Kerry
didn't like him. Gardner was only there for Kerry's last two months, and probably resented the fact that his lieutenant was going home while he could still walk, leaving Gardner behind, still facing the enemy.

The others only had contact through paperwork or through listening to Gardner bellyache.

There's one in every crowd. We all know this to be true. That is the only counter he has to make.

Kerry spoke out against the war when he came home. He didn't speak for all Vietnam vets, some of whom are nuts enough to believe in the righteousness of that idiotic war to this day. I think they're diggning all of them up right now to make these smear videos. It doesn't mean they ever saw anything of Kerry before he testified in front of Congress.

11. Surely Kerry's people have anticipated the likelihood
of this sort of attack. Someone is lying. The repug ad says Kerry only served 4 months in Vietnam - is that right? I can see people saying that three Purple Hearts, a Bronze and a Silver Star is a whole lot of metals for 4 months of action. Still, I don't see how you can fake a Silver Star - except that Tilman was awarded a Silver, postumously, for being shot by one of his own guys. So, maybe this isn't as clear cut as that. What will be the response? It had better be quick and had better be good.

14. I agree
I'm kind of concerned about the guy who said that he treated Kerry for his wounds in Vietnam.... I'm sure that can be substantiated...
I would hope to God that they have been ready for this. These guys have been trashing him since the primaries. They should have had a team ready to go after them. They should also immediately file a lawsuit for slander. Granted, Kerry is a public official, but this ad certainly is clear and convincing evidence of malice! That's the standard... if its untrue, then there is grounds to file suit.

15. McCain condemns anti-Kerry ads, calls on White House to follow suit

McCain condemns anti-Kerry ads, calls on White House to follow suit

By RON FOURNIER
The Associated Press
8/5/04 10:20 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, called an ad criticizing John Kerry's military service "dishonest and dishonorable" and urged the White House on Thursday to condemn it as well.

"It was the same kind of deal that was pulled on me," McCain said in an interview with The Associated Press, referring to his bitter Republican primary fight with President Bush.

The 60-second ad features Vietnam veterans who accuse the Democratic presidential nominee of lying about his decorated Vietnam War record and betraying his fellow veterans by later opposing the conflict.

"When the chips were down, you could not count on John Kerry," one of the veterans, Larry Thurlow, says in the ad.

The ad, scheduled to air in a few markets in Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin, was produced by Stevens, Reed, Curcio and Potham, the same team that produced McCain's ads in 2000.

"I wish they hadn't done it," McCain said of his former advisers. "I don't know if they knew all the facts."
