Microsoft man goes to US for training, dies mysteriously

FRIDAY, AUGUST 06, 2004 12:05:30 AM

Partho Sarthi Ghosh
KANPUR: He went on a cloud of enthusiasm, he came back in a coffin: Partho Sarthi Ghosh, a 24-year-old software engineer and a Microsoft employee, had gone to the US for a month's training. On July 27, he was found dead, wrapped in a sheet, under a hotel bed in Redmond, Seattle.

No one knows, or is telling his family, how he died. His parents weren't informed until the day after his death, and it wasn't until Thursday morning that his body was flown to Kanpur, to his family

..snip..

Ghosh says while issuing the death certificate, Brian Mazrim, managing director, public health, Seattle & King County, had remarked that the immediate cause of death was "pending".

Partho's death comes in the wake of reports of xenophobic American professionals targeting Indians. The Information Technology Professionals Association of America and other such organisations have launched campaigns against American firms hiring Indians.

1. Time to look at his email.
And his blogs, if any. Might want to dredge up any internet sites he's been on and take a look at those, too.

Who knows? Maybe he had a solid set of XP code he wanted to sell, and that's why he was killed.

He flew to Redmond to attend job training and was murdered. Did he know something?

It's a valid, if frightening, angle.

3. But it's most likely that ...
... he fell victim to criminals whose motivations had nothing to do with his origins or his profession.

Crime has a habit of being random, unpredictable, and stupid.

it's far more likely anyway.

However, if there's a *possible* ulterior motive, these days, I'll at least consider it.

13. right... but: "wrapped in a sheet, under a hotel bed in Redmond"
okay... so we know that

a) someone was either in his hotel room, or took him there afterwards.

b) had the presence of mind to try and hide the body, albeit wrapping it in a sheet and putting it under the bed is not a 'professional' trademark.

c) if it had been a professional hit, he probably would have been left on top of his bed. Same goes for a random mugging -- say, over drugs -- or by a hooker.

d) Why did they wrap the body in a sheet? Why put it under the bed? They wrapped the body in a sheet because they knew him, and on some level had respect for him. And they hide it under the bed to put time between themselves and the victim.

If I were the dectectives in this case, I'd be looking at the people around the MS Redmond campus. It wouldn't be the first time someone has killed to protect their career.

11. He may have
but until you have any evidence I think it's just unfounded speculation -- even if deliciously masochistic...

14. It could also be a run of the mill murder
young man in US for a month long stay...meets a young woman that is more than happy to befriend him...little does he know that she has a boyfriend that is going to "roll him" when they go back to his hotel.

We had something like this happen in Pittsburgh....some guy from out of state was murdered for his wallet by some young woman and her friends.

crime goes up as the economy goes down.

15. As someone pointed out .. the wrapping seems that it might have
been personal. I've only known those in other countries to wrap bodies in a wrap or something...not in the US. However, it is possible that they wanted to cover it, but sliding the body under the bed wouldn't allow that, so they wrapped it. Dunno, very odd though.
