The Arizona RepublicGov. Janet Napolitano will be part of a five- person team for the Democratic presidential ticket that hashes out the crucial ground rules of the televised presidential debates with counterparts in the Bush campaign.
The three events, combined with a vice presidential debate, could help sway a too-close-to-call election between Sen. John Kerry and President Bush. The final debate takes place Oct. 13 in Tempe. As part of the John Kerry debate team, Napolitano will help determine the moderators, the format of the questions, if the candidates will sit or stand and how much time there will be for opening statements and rebuttals. ..
In addition to Napolitano, Team Kerry includes Vernon Jordan, a close confidante of President Clinton, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, longtime Democratic lawyer Robert Barnett and Jim Johnson, who headed up Kerry's vice presidential search. In 2000, Barnett played the role of Dick Cheney in debate practices with former vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman.
Televised presidential debates have affected the outcome of presidential elections since a victory by John F. Kennedy after the first televised debate in 1960. Most who listened on radio thought Richard Nixon came out ahead. ..
