Court Orders New Chicago Mayoral Primary

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Supreme Court on Friday ordered a new Democratic mayoral primary in East Chicago, saying the 2003 election in which the longtime mayor claimed victory was fraught with corruption.

In a 3-2 ruling, the justices said the election results were "inherently deceptive and unreliable" and blamed a "widespread and pervasive pattern of deliberate conduct calculated to cast unlawful and deceptive ballots."

State Attorney General Steve Carter, who asked the court to intervene, said it was the first time the justices had ordered a new election. ...

"I'm so glad the Supreme Court freed East Chicago," said Pabey, a former city council member and police chief. "Everyone has always been afraid to come out and vote." ...
