New Claims Surround Anti-Kerry Ad
By JIM RUTENBERG

Published: August 7, 2004

ASHINGTON, Aug. 6 - <snip>
The Boston Globe quoted the man, Lt. Cmdr. George Elliott, retired, who as Mr. Kerry's commander in Vietnam had recommended him for a Silver Star, as recanting a recent sworn statement...

<snip>

When accusations surfaced during Mr. Kerry's 1996 senatorial re-election campaign that he had shot the Vietnamese in the back as he was wounded and fleeing, Commander Elliott spoke in Mr. Kerry's defense, telling reporters, "The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is something not to be looked down upon, but it was an act of courage."

Lawyers for Mr. Kerry's campaign and the Democratic Party used the inconsistencies to persuade another television station, WTVG in Toledo, Ohio, not to run the spot.

But the station reversed itself later in the day Friday when the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth released another affidavit from Commander Elliott attacking the article and affirming his earlier statement.

<snip>

The party and the Kerry campaign have released bits of information that they say show connections between Mr. Bush and the anti-Kerry group, mostly by noting that Bob J. Perry, a Texas developer whose path has frequently crossed that of Karl Rove, Mr. Bush's top political strategist, donated $100,000 to the Swift boat group.

On CNN, Steve Elmendorf, Mr. Kerry's deputy campaign manager, said the commercial was the product of "Rove-Bush cronies" and called upon the White House and Bush campaign to repudiate it. Bush campaign officials declined to do so, noting that Mr. Kerry has not disavowed hard-hitting advertisements against Mr. Bush run by outside groups like Moveon.org.

Nicolle Devenish, Mr. Bush's communications director, said that while Mr. Rove and Mr. Perry were friends, Mr. Rove had said that they had not spoken in the last year or so.

1. Richard Mellon Scaiffe who financed the attacks against
Clinton is financing the publishing of the Vets Against Kerry book
through his publishing company Regerney.

Gina Easton of the Boston Globe in an interview said Scaiffe, billionaire from the Mellon bank, is doing the same thing to Kerry
he did to Clinton.

Scaiffe began and funded the rag the American Spectator which printed
stories about Clinton equal to "my grandfather is an alien".

4. Perhaps it should come from the band of brothers.
Or maybe MoveOn could do a spot on Repug dirty tricks.: from Watergate to Waffles a la Lt. Cmdr. George Elliott, retired.

30. No. My suggestion was not about Kerry not soiling his hands.
Rather it was an attempt to not fall into the Repugnant trap of defending himself against endless spurious charges. I thought that the band of brothers-who were there- would be able to effectively defuse the charges by those who were not there. Actually, as I continue to watch the repub vets story unravel, it might be best to step back and let them unravel themselves. Peace.

24. I don't think Kerry should spend one penny of his 75 million
against this trash. The swiftvets are a 527 org so let one of our 527s do the dirty work. Kerry's 75 million has to last 5 weeks longer than Bush's

7. Vets Deserve Respect
These Swiftboat liars do not deserve any respect until they stop lying about John Kerry-- their behavior is dishonorable, unpatriotic & beneath contempt.

8. We can honor their service then
while condemning their allowing themselves to be used as pawns in a political attack against someone who faced the EXACT same dangers in VietNam as they did. Especially when those they choose to front for are for the most part chickenhawks that never saw a war they weren't all for other people fighting. To make it simple for you, they were honorable then but not now.

greatly by spreading lies and inuendos about someone who earned the Silver Star. I certainly hope people dismiss them for what they are.

31. Pawns? Corsi's no pawn, nor are those who choose to make tv ads
during a heated political campaign. Particularly if they create an ad lying about the service of others and a book designed to smear a United States Senator, war hero and nominee for president.

McCain says these are the same scumbags Bush set on him during the primaries in 2000, and on Max Cleland in 02. Honor? These individuals don't know the meaning of the word. If they want their service honored, they ought to honor the service of John Kerry, John McCain and Max Cleland.

13. Elliot could be senile ...
Although I have no reasoins for the hypothesis, senility would explain a lot. He might not be able to remember what he did earlier in the day:

"Talk a bit about how Kerry was not honest about Vietnam."
"John Kerry was not honest about what happened in Vietnam."

"Sign this"
"OK."

"Do you think saying that makes you look silly?"
"Yes. I am the silly one here."

"Sign this"
"OK."

Dunno - does George Elliot hold a job? What do we know about him?

26. Did you notice as soon as the story came out that Elliot
had recanted these bozos put his original affidavit on the internet. This was a warning to him that he could be charged with lying under oath. And soon we saw his new affidavit. I guess the Glove should of had him sign an affifdavit for their story. Looks to me like these guys (vets) are scared stupid this is blowing up in their faces.

9. Rove and Perry haven't spoken in a year or so???
Gee.. just like.. umm what's his name? Oh, Mr. Lay and his non-friend Mr. Bush. Who gives a fuck if they "haven't spoken", it's all part of the plan to make sure they can do their hit squad on Kerry's record. These M.F.s need to be brought to their knees on this.. this is in the reprehensible category, right along with the Willie Horton ads (a bush special), the attack on McCain (bush again), and the Max Clelland (rovian special).

Apparently it doesn't take much to outsmart them.

These media conglomerates are dedicated to keeping the airwaves free from unseemly controversy, so the rightwing viewpoints can be spread unimpeded.

28. Don't these repukes realize that they're dragging down
the integrity of anyone who served in Vietnam? Anyone with at least a double-digit IQ (which eliminates most of Bush's supporters) should realize that if the Swiftboats accusations on Kerry are true, that it cannot be an isolated incident, and anyone who served in a similar capacity in Vietnam should be called to questioning, too. How many people who faced that kind of stress and constant attack would want to be dragged through the mud again after facing what they did when they came home from Vietnam some 30 years ago.

If it was me, I would be livid. And I would certainly tell the Bush-Rove political machine where they could stick it.
