California Republicans appear divided over Bush prospects for November

JIM WASSERMAN, Associated Press Writer
Saturday, August 7, 2004

(08-07) 15:21 PDT (AP) --

SAN DIEGO -- With new storm clouds over job growth, a weakened stock market and growing public unease over Iraq, California Republicans appear divided over whether President George Bush will win a second term Nov. 2.

snip...
Those who remain optimistic about Bush's November prospects cited Kerry's lack of a post-convention "bounce" this month, the customary lift candidates get in polls after their national nominating gathering.

"You haven't had that since George McGovern in 1972," Orange County delegate Steve Becker said.

Becker, 37, a party recruiter and candidate for the Lake Forest City Council, said he can't fathom how Kerry, a "northeastern liberal," can carry the South, which has been key to the strides the GOP has made in recent elections. Kerry, he said, lacks the populist touch that Southern voters associated with former President Bill Clinton.

"Bush may not be the sharpest stick out there, but he can connect with people," Becker said.

4. Capitol Gang "Fact" on CNN today:
John Kerry got the lowest "bounce" since McGovern in 1972

The program referred to the CNN poll showing Bush ahead and the ABC poll showing Kerry ahead by 2 points. The spin was that Bush and Kerry are in a dead heat.

The average of the current polls actually show Kerry with an edge, but to be fair I don't know when Capitol Gang was taped.

Novaks and some female both were adamant that the ad attacking Kerry's Vietnam service was valid and truthful. Another person on the program got really angry and refuted those charges.

I hope Novak winds up in prison for being a traitor!

12. Al Hunt was the angry one.
BTW, he is married to Judy Woodruff on CNN. And the female attacking Kerry is Kate o'Beirn. She and Novak never have a kind word to say about a Democrat. Al always does, but sometimes he will point out things that aren't too good about Dems too. But not very often since we're almost perfect! ;-)

6. Don't you just LOVE the media??
They CREATE the no-bounce meme, then interview EACH OTHER about it, "wonder 'why no bounce', and then just keep going around and around with the non story..

WHERE DID THEY THINK THE "BOUNCE" WAS GOING TO COME FROM??

48-48..leaves ony 4% (who are probably not even paying attention)..

No one from the die-hard Bush camp was going to defect to Kerry, even if he offered them each a free pony..

3. Who is bush connecting with?
Certainly not me... but perhaps it's because I'm one of those northeastern liberals.

in the form of his loyalty oath. I cannot believe how desperate these people are. pathetic.

13. 'Bush may not be the sharpest stick out there'
Now there's a campaign slogan I'd like to see: "Vote Bush -- He's Not The Sharpest Stick In The Bunch"

Before 9-11 someone in the Canadian government said that * was stupid. The Canadian P.M. came to *'s defense, saying "President Bush isn't dumb." I've always thought that was a backhanded slam at *, since it would have been just as easy to make a positive statement: "President Bush has a unique understanding of the way the world works."

"Not the sharpest stick"? What does that say about people who support him, like the guy who made the statement?
