NYT- U.S. Says Man Had Ties to Plot to Disrupt Vote
WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 - A Pakistani man whose arrest provided information about the reconnaissance of financial institutions in New York, Newark and Washington was also communicating with Qaeda operatives who the authorities say are plotting to carry out an attack intended to disrupt the fall elections, a senior intelligence official said Saturday.

Senior intelligence and counterterrorism officials said it was not clear whether the people behind the surveillance of the financial institutions and the people involved in the election threat were part of the same group, or belonged to overlapping or separate ones.

The arrest last month of the Pakistani, Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan, had already prompted a search in the United States, Britain and other countries to locate the people behind the surveillance, which took place three or four years ago. Now the authorities say Mr. Khan's arrest is also helping them unravel a threat to carry out an attack this year inside the United States.

It is not clear whether Mr. Khan represents the second channel of intelligence that officials have alluded to in recent days that, they say, convinced them that the reconnaissance of financial institutions was related to current threats.

1. "Senior intelligence and counterterrorism officials said

It would have been clear eventually if Bushco hadn't blown Khan's cover...

Gee, you'd almost think bush wanted an election-disrupting attack...but heck, no one would let it happen on purpose, would they?

5. Why would the terraists want to disrupt the elections?
That makes zero sense. It would only keep Bush in power... Bush, the Conqueror of Terrorists, etc. I thought they hated us because Bush is such an SOB hellbent on wiping out the muslims they cannot convert. Why in the hell would they help Bush by screwing our election?

Why can't I get the NorthWoods Project out of my head at times like this... Anyone that doesn't get the reference, Google it. It'll make you realize that YES our Government CAN imagine attacking our own country for political gain. The Project was not carried out, but it was there.. it was drawn out.. and it was written on official US stationery. :scared:

7. EVERY SINGLE DAY since breaking the story that the alert intel was old...
the NYT has had at least one front-page story on terror sourced by "officials." I don't know if the Times is being made somehow to do penance for uncovering and front-paging that story, or if the "officials" are still trying to justify that suspiciously-timed terror alert based on old intel -- or both.

9. I think the Times is doing a number on Bush when they do this.
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 09:06 AM by pookastew
Not to give them too much credit, but anyone reading this story will take away from it what we did: That the the White House compromised a double agent, caused "strains between the United States and Britain", alarmed people "unnecessarily", interfered "with legal efforts to extradite suspects", and "cost the United States a valuable source"--just so they could get a headline about a potential plot to "disrupt the fall elections".

Sure, Faux News will run with the headline, but the reality is right there in the story for everyone else.

11. You're right, they've woven the truth in somewhere in these articles --
I don't really like to bash the Times. If it weren't for our print press, especially the NYT, WP and LAT (all far from perfect), we'd be in a lot worse shape than we are. I think the worst done by the NYT has been the vendetta against Bill Clinton under Howell Raines, the contrast in coverage between the Bush and Gore campaigns, and Judith Miller's pre-Iraq reporting.

13. agreed on all counts.
They definitely had it in for Clinton...and Gore.

The pattern I'm picking up from them (lately) is that they put both the WH spin and the truth in articles, so each side can take away what they want from them.

Like in this article, you can get the real story, but they aren't going to draw the conslusions for you.

As for Miller, she seems to have been banished from the front page, from what I can see.

8. Group bushista is "plotting to disrupt fall elections."

It is as clear as a bell who the people are behind the plotting. More misbranded advertising to soften the public for the final blows to the Constitution to come in November.

16. What has happened to that Moon to Kim Il used Russian sub deal?
... was that a real deal?

Did Washington Times owner, self-proclaimed living God, and long-time Bush-family friend, Reverend Moon, actually sell North Korea five Russian subs capable of launching North Korean missiles at us?

Will Bush provoke North Korea to nuke San Fransisco by invading them in the next two months? Would Bush then retaliate by brazenly nuking North Korea, and brilliantly sinking their five used-Russian subs, before finally declaring marshal law here at home?

Will Democrats will be herded into "terrorist camps" and tortured? Perhaps DU members will be forced to watch a continuous thirty-second loop of Fox-News, with Dubya dubbing himself "President for Life."

Ignore all other claims they make.

The NYT intends to help them like they did last time. The NYT is not a credible news source.
